The Birmingham Public Library is hosting the first-ever shelter-in-place Bards and Brews this Friday, April 3, at 5:00 p.m.

BPL’s popular spoken word poetry/craft beer event, in its 10th year, is normally held at library locations, entertainment and craft beer venues across metro Birmingham, but is moving online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are encouraging the public to tune in through our Bards & Brews Facebook page,” said Candice Hardy, BPL Outreach Librarian and project manager over Bards & Brews. “We are asking participants to provide his/her email to register through our Facebook as well.”

Seven spoken word poets are being invited to participate in the online Bards & Brews, and some longtime veterans of the on-site events, including BPL Bards committee member Lee Green, have already expressed interest. BPL’s Bards & Brews Facebook page will be broadcasting the Bards & Brews virtually through the web conferencing site Zoom, Green said.

“We will share more information about how people can participate and enjoy from their homes,” Green said.

The online Bards & Brews will be absent the  free craft beer samples popular among attendees, but Green is hoping viewers will support local craft breweries. “As far as the beer, everyone is on their own but we want to encourage pick-up at Birmingham area craft breweries, Green said.
