Withers’ family issued a statement to the Associated Press today, Friday, April 3, announcing the three-time Grammy winner died of heart complications.

Withers is best known for his soul hits from the 1970s, including “Lovely Day”, “Use Me” and “AIn’t No Sunshine.”

His biggest hit was the 1972 classic “Lean on Me”, which hit No. 1 on both the Hot 100 and R&B charts.

The song has been a source of strength by those suffering during the current coronavirus pandemic. In a video that has gone viral, members of Baptist Memorial Hospital’s operating room staff in Memphis, Tenn. sang “Lean on Me” while making sure that their front-line colleagues are well-equipped daily with care packages that include N95 protective masks decorated with a handwritten Bible verse on the front.
