NBC's Spotlight on Line Dancing Trend? Birmingham Public Library Has Been Line Dancing For Years

This morning (July 27),  NBC's TODAY show correspondent Priscilla Thompson reported about the remarkable comeback of line dancing.

Once wildly popular in the 1990s, line dancing is making a huge comeback thanks in large part to Generation Z. According to NBC, young adults are discovering what many longtime dancers have known for years—line dancing is a fun way to exercise, relieve stress, meet new people and simply have a good time.

As I watched the segment, I couldn't help but smile.

Why?

Because at the Birmingham Public Library (BPL), we've been watching this trend unfold for quite some time. Over the past two years as PR specialist, I've had the opportunity to photograph and write about some of our most popular wellness programs, including line dancing, chair aerobics and chair yoga classes offered free at several Library locations.

One thing has become obvious. These classes aren't just about exercise.

They're about community, building friendships, and improving physical/mental health while having fun.

BPL Was Dancing Before It Became the Latest Trend

One of my favorite programs this year took place during Black History Month at our Titusville Branch Library. The event, Books on the Ground, was inspired in part by the viral line dance hit "Boots on the Ground." The program combined Black history, agriculture, veterinary medicine and line dancing into one unforgettable afternoon.

It perfectly demonstrated something we've always believed at Birmingham Public Library: Libraries are about much more than books. They're places where communities learn, connect and celebrate together.

Wellness at the Library

In recent months, I've covered popular programs from line dancing to Slide City ChairAerobics, and a new 5-week Chair Yoga series launching July 30 at the downtown Birmingham Public Library (Link https://bplolinenews.blogspot.com/2026/07/birmingham-public-library-expands.html) .

Whether you're looking to improve your balance, increase your flexibility, get your heart pumping or simply meet new friends, chances are there's a free class waiting for you at one of our library locations.
