Therapy Animals to Dinosaur Discoveries: Woodlawn Branch Library Continues
Summer Reading Adventures
With just
a few weeks remaining in Birmingham Public Library’s 2026 Summer Reading
Program, "Unearth a Story," Woodlawn Branch Library
continues helping children, families and adults discover new experiences
through programs that inspire curiosity, creativity and connection.
This
summer, patrons have been exploring stories in unexpected ways — from meeting
special animal helpers to uncovering the mysteries of prehistoric creatures,
creating crafts and participating in programs designed to bring neighbors
together.
Woodlawn
Branch Manager Monica Slater said the library has enjoyed providing a variety
of educational and entertaining programs that encourage patrons of all ages to
learn, connect and have fun.
“We have
enjoyed offering programs this summer that appeal to everyone in our
community,” Slater said. “From line dancing and crafts to our Hand in Paw
animal-assisted therapy program and educational activities for children, we
want people to know that the library is a place where they can learn something
new, meet new friends and enjoy meaningful experiences together.”
On July 8,
Woodlawn Branch welcomed Hand in Paw Animal-Assisted Therapy for a special
Summer Reading experience that showed participants the powerful connection
between people and animals. Young patrons met therapy dog, Poppy, and learn how
specially-trained therapy animals provide comfort, encouragement and emotional
support to children, seniors, hospital patients and others throughout Alabama.
Participants
heard heartwarming stories about the bond between people and animals while
discovering how therapy animals help improve the lives of those they serve. The
interactive program gave families an opportunity to ask questions, meet the
animals and learn that some of the most meaningful stories are created through
kindness, compassion and connection.
