BookLetters , a new service from the Birmingham Public Library and BookLetters, offers book reviews and information on hundreds of authors, all easily accessible online. Readers can use the service either at home or at the library. To receive regular updates on books in special areas of interest, simply sign up for BookLetters' email newsletter service . Reviews of recommended books in your favorite genres will be delivered right to your inbox.

The Avondale Branch of the Birmingham Public Library reopened this morning with official greetings from Mayor Bernard Kincaid and several other officials. Over 200 people attended the ceremony and reception. To see additional photographs of the ceremony click here .

The Avondale Branch Grand Re-opening Ceremony will take place at the library this Thursday, March 30 at 10:30 a.m. Open house will be held Sunday, April 2 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Come be a part of this exciting celebration.

National Library Week April 2-8 In celebration of National Library Week, April 2-8, the Birmingham Public Library is hosting an “Amnesty Week,” where patrons can bring in overdue materials without incurring the library fines. Patrons may bring in these materials and the coupon above to any Birmingham Public Library branch location on any day from April 2nd through the 8th and their fines will be waived.

April 15th is just around the corner. Do you need help with your taxes, a copy of a tax form, or tax information? If so, the library can help As a service to the community, the Birmingham Public Library provides copies of current Federal and Alabama tax forms, instructions, and publications. Basic forms are available at most library locations; a more extensive collection of forms is available in the Government Documents Department in the Linn-Henley Building.

Mr. Max Steinmetz was born in Romania. From 1941, at the age of 17 until 1945 when he was liberated by Allied Forces, he was forced into ghettos, incarcerated at Auschwitz, imprisoned at Birkenau and Dachau, and escaped from the German death march, seeking refuge in a farm house. This program is a part of Central's Brown Bag Lunch Program . The programs are held at 12:00 p.m. in the 3rd floor Arrington Auditorium of the Linn-Henley Building . The library provides beverages. The Red Mountain Cemetery Record of Interments Database was recently featured in an article by The Birmingham News . Read all about it .

A new BPL created database is now available online and will be useful for genealogists, historians, and students of public health. The Red Mountain Cemetery Record of Interments, 1888-1906 , includes all information found in the original interments book, including names, dates of death, and causes of death. Red Mountain Cemetery, sometimes called Southside Cemetery, was used by the City of Birmingham from 1888 to 1906 as a place to bury the indigent dead. The cemetery contains 4,711 burials and was located south of the city on the site that is now Lane Park and the Birmingham Zoo.

The East Lake Branch Library will host a program about the City of Birmingham’s Flood Safety Awareness Week . The program will include information on monitoring weather conditions and stream levels during flooding conditions. City staff will be available to answer questions regarding flood safety awareness. The program will be held Monday, March 20th from 11:00 a. m. until noon. For additional information call East Lake at 836-3341.
