Central's May 3rd Brown Bag Program will be a discussion by Miles College historian Gary Sprayberry entitled Interrupted Melody: The White Supremacist Attack on Nat King Cole . Join us to hear about this April 1956 episode involving four white men beating up the singer on the Municipal Auditorium stage before a live audience. Central's Brown Bag Programs are held in the Arrington Auditorium from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

The Central Library will be closed Friday to repair the air-conditioning system. All BPL branches will be open as usual.

The Central Branch is closed today due to power problems.

BPL will host the Hitachi Puppet Show on April 27th at 6:30 p.m. in Central's Arrington Auditorium . This performance of traditional puppetry by the puppeteers of Hitachi , Japan, Birmingham's Sister City, is a lively expression of an enduring folk art. Hitachi is known throughout Japan for puppet performances which play a prominent role in religious and civic festivities. This program is presented by the Birmingham Public Library, the Birmingham International Festival , and the Birmingham Sister Cities Commission . For additional information call 226-3670. The Seasoned Performers will present their newest production at Five Points West on April 26 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Please call the Five Points West Information Department at 226-4015 to register in advance. Lunch will be served.

Birmingham's Turn-of-the-Century Lake Resorts exhibit is now available online. The streetcar brought tremendous changes to the everyday lives of Americans. Beginning in the late 1800s, the streetcar encouraged the growth of suburbs by allowing people to live miles from their work. The streetcar also opened new avenues for amusement that led to the development of Birmingham’s turn-of-the-century lake resorts. More...

From March 27 through May 5 see the "Images of Birmingham" photography exhibit by Larry O. Gay . The exhibit is located on the fourth floor of the Central library.
