Adventure Begins At Inglenook Branch Library: Summer Reading 2024 Spotlight

The Inglenook Branch Library encouraged reading this summer as a part of Adventure Begings at Your Library. 20 of their young patrons participated in the challenge to read books, tell the staff what they learned, and win prizes. They incentivized reading with daily giveaways and chances to win the periodic raffle drawings. 

Adventure Begins at West End Branch: Summer Reading Spotlight July 2024

  Adventure continues at West End Branch Library, which is hosting 27 Summer Reading programs during June and July. They are among 256 Summer Reading activities for kids, teens and adults happening at 16 Birmingham Public Library (BPL) locations across the city.  If you haven't registered for Summer Reading yet, stop by any BPL location to register for Summer Reading and get a B-I-N-G-O card for your age range and win prizes for completing it.  In early June, BPL posted a spotlight on some of West End Branch's Summer Reading programs. The Birmingham Public Library (BPL)  has  256 free Summer Reading programs  planned for this summer that all patrons to enjoy.  July is the last month for Summer Reading , but you can still stop in at any  BPL location  to register and win prizes for completing B-I-N-G-O cards and more.

  Birmingham, Ala. - Last week, the Birmingham Public Library's 2024 Summer Reading featured a special African drumming performance at the Central Library by Barry Johnson in celebration of Juneteenth.  This week, you can gain more knowledge about the art of drumming at five other BPL locations. Get Rhythm: Just Imagine A World Full of Music! features internationally known drumming facilitator John Scalici, founder of Get Rhythm .  Events kicked off with performances last week (June 18) at Avondale Regional Library , and continued yesterday, June 24, as Scalici led drumming circles at North Birmingham  Regional and East Ensley libraries. Exhibition of Artwork by New ASCA Fellow Will Jacks Extended through Friday, June 28

Will Jacks,  Joshua Tree - San Bernardino County, California  (detail)  Wheatpasted photo-collage on wood, 96'' by 96' Due to popular demand, artist Will Jacks’ striking exhibition of photo-collages has been prolonged for an additional week at the Birmingham Public Library . The exhibition opened on May 3 and will be on display in the Fourth Floor Gallery at downtown’s Central Library  through Friday, June 28.  Earlier this month, Jacks was honored with a fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts , which it awards to outstanding individual artists and arts educators in Alabama to provide support for the creative growth of their careers.  Rabbit, rabbit is Jacks’ first solo show in Birmingham and represents the first time the 22 featured works have been exhibited. Check Out Our Willie Mays Collection at the Birmingham Public Library & JCLC

  The Birmingham Public Library & other libraries in Jefferson County have 198 books & DVDs about Willie Mays and the Negro League. BPL's digital collection includes a series of interviews with former Birmingham Black Baron players and BPL has YouTube interviews with Black Baron players as well. Ala. - Did you know that public libraries in Jefferson County, including the Birmingham Public Library , have nearly 200 books, DVDs and other items about baseball legend and Birmingham native Willie Mays ?  Click here for the full link of our Willie Mays library catalog collection available for checkout.  Birmingham's own "Say Hey Kid" was a baseball star with the Birmingham Black Barons before leading a Hall of Fame career in Major League Baseball (Mays was inducted in 1979).
