Some Birmingham Public Library Locations to Celebrate Star Wars Day on Wednesday, May 4
The Birmingham Public Library will join Star Wars fans across the globe on Wednesday, May 4, in celebrating a day affectionately known as Star Wars Day.
“May the 4th Be With You” is a pun Star Wars fans worldwide have turned into a rallying cry to celebrate their love for one of the most popular movie series of all time. A play on the famous “May the Force be with you” line from Star Wars films, the Internet has allowed Star Wars fans worldwide to unite and connect every year on May 4.
While the idea of Star Wars Day on May 4 didn’t begin with Lucasfilm, the creator of Star Wars, the film company has embraced the day, as evidenced by its official website link, http://www.starwars.com/may-the-4th.
The Central Library will show the latest Star Wars movie released in the fall of 2015 as part of Star Wars Day in the Story Castle on Wednesday, May 4, beginning at 3:30 p.m. The PG-13 movie showing is free to the public, but space is limited.
Allie Graham, a librarian in the Central Library's Arts, Literature and Sports Department, loves the Star Wars Day. Her department has set up a Star Wars-themed book table, and will have some coloring pages available for library patrons on Wednesday.

Graham, a longtime Star Wars fan, said since the original Star Wars debuted in May 1977, the Star Wars universe has been a part of American pop culture.
“From the currently eight films, TV shows, toys, and comic books to novels, coffee mugs, and board games, Star Wars has made a significant impact in our culture,” Graham said. “Phrases like 'I am your father,' and 'May the Force be with you' have entered standard vocabulary. Earlier this year I went to a wedding that played Star Wars music as the recessional. Star Wars Day is a fun way to celebrate main streaming of this aspect of 'nerd' culture.”
The Eastwood Branch Library also has Star Wars activity sheets available for children Wednesday. Brandon Crawford Smith, the branch manager, said the library’s 2016 Summer Reading kick-off event will have a Star Wars theme featuring Jedi training on May 26.
“There will be some major figures from the Star Wars universe on hand as well as Jedi training for the young attendees,” Smith said. “There will also be icy treats from the planet Hoth and other light refreshments.”
