Movies about Love to Love

February is a busy month with Black History Month, the Grammys, the Oscars, and Valentine’s Day. As a person who loves history and movies, this is a great way for me to marry my love of movies and history together. Love can come in all shapes, sizes, and dimensions, including romantic love as well as love that come from respect, trust, and caring for someone or something deeply and profoundly. Compiled is a list of romantic movies with African American actors and actresses.



Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967)
Let’s begin with Oscar winners Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, a 1967 movie about a white woman and black doctor who travel to San Francisco to meet her wealthy liberal parents. Dinner is served along with issues of race and racism, especially when the disapproving future African American in-laws to be arrive for dinner.



Love & Basketball (2000) Sanaa Lathan, Omar Epps, Alfre Woodard
American romantic drama tells the story of Quincy McCall (Epps) and Monica Wright (Lathan), two next-door neighbors in Los Angeles, California who are pursuing their basketball careers before eventually falling for each other.



Save the Last Dance (2001) Julia Stiles, Sean Patrick Thomas, Kerry Washington
A young couple must deal with the problems that arise from an interracial relationship. But they bond over their shared love for dance as they fall in love.



Something New (2006) Sanaa Lathan, Taraji P. Henson, Simon Baker
A career-first woman, Kenya McQueen, always knew what she wanted in relationships, until she unexpectedly falls for a white architect.



Just Wright (2010) Queen Latifah, Common, Paula Patton
Physical therapist Leslie Wright (Queen Latifah) lands the dream job of working with basketball superstar Scott McKnight (Common). She falls in love with him, but his attention is for her best friend.



Good Deeds (2012) Tyler Perry, Thandie Newton
Wealthy businessman Wesley Deeds (Tyler Perry) has done what's expected of him and has settled into a predictable routine. His life begins to change when he meets Lindsey Wakefield (Thandie Newton), a struggling single mother who has just been evicted. Wesley offers to help Lindsey get back on her feet even though he's already engaged. Wesley finds himself torn between what is expected of him and what he really wants.



Last Holiday (2006) Queen Latifah, L L Cool J, Gérard Depardieu
Discovering she has a terminal illness prompts shy saleswoman Georgia Byrd (Queen Latifah) to reflect on her cautious life. Georgia withdraws her life saving, jets off to Europe where she lives like a millionaire. Georgia charms everybody she meets, including renowned Chef Didier (Gérard Depardieu). The only one missing from her new life is her longtime crush Sean Matthews (LL Cool J).
