Avondale Library Hosting Several Online Programs in April

The Birmingham Public Library will offer online services and virtual programs for patrons to utilize while homebound during the coronavirus pandemic.

The first branch to kick off our virtual service is the Avondale Regional Branch, which has announced several online programs throughout April.

Even though BPL’s 19 physical locations across the city are closed, our virtual library remains open 24/7 for patrons to download books, DVDs and other resources such as Overdrive, Hoopla and Kanopy. Go to the BPL home page  and click on the database you are interested in to make your selections.

Here is a list of online programs the Avondale Library is hosting in April:

Thursday, April 2, 7:30 p.m. Keeping it Reel: Weekly Kanopy Film Club 
Other Thursdays in April - April 9, April 16, April 23, and April 30 

Join us as Avondale Library Adult Department’s new film club explores a different film each Thursday from Kanopy’s vast selection of documentaries, foreign masterpieces, and classics. The next week the club will meet via Zoom video conferencing to share their opinions of the film.

The Kanopy app is free for those who have a library card. Members are still eligible even if outstanding fines are due or if their card has expired. Kanopy can be downloaded to any smart device (including smartphones, tablets, Roku, Apple TV or computers).

The April 2 film is Ay Mariposa (a 2019 film directed by Krista Schyler). The Zoom meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m., lasting approximately 40 minutes.

Friday, April 3, 3:00 p.m. - Sci-Phi Fridays: Science Fiction as Philosophy Discussion Group

Through viewing this sci-fi video course, offered by The Great Courses, participants in the video conference discussion will explore how popular science fiction shows have tackled profound issues such as autonomy, sentience, pacifism, colonialism, racism, grief, morality and much more.

The first episode of The Great Courses’ Sci-Phi: Science Fiction as Philosophy,  Inception and the Interpretation of Art, will be shown for free through BPL’s Kanopy app, followed by discussions through a Zoom video conference on April 3.

Tuesday, April 7, 2:00 p.m. - Miss Fisher and The Crypt of Tears 

Wish you could talk about exciting details of a great movie with fellow movie lovers? Join Avondale Library through the video conferencing platform Zoom, for an online discussion of the epic movie mystery, Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears. Participants will follow the Honorable Phryne Fisher and Jack Robinson on an international adventure in search of an ancient treasure. The movie is available for free through Acorn Television and will feature beautiful costumes and an exotic international backdrop. Acorn now offers a 30 day free trial. Monday, April 13, 7:00 p.m. - Cozy Mystery Club 

Read the mystery selection of the month available through BPL’s Hoopla app then join us for a video-conference discussion. The April selection is Kerry Greenwood’s Cocaine Blues, the first book in the Phryne Fisher series set in 1920s Melbourne, which is the basis for the popular Australian television series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.

Friday, April 17, 2:00 p.m. - Podcast Discussion Group

Avondale Library’s podcast group similar to a book club. Participants will listen to selected podcast episodes, meet monthly and have a lively discussion. New listeners and podcast enthusiasts are welcome. Avondale Library started its Podcast Club in May 2019.

The first listening group will be dedicated to happiness. You don’t have to listen to all the episodes to participate. Listen to the suggested podcast episodes below and join Avondale Library through the video conferencing platform, Zoom for an online discussion. This group is open to adults.

Monday, April 20, 5:00 p.m. - Beyond the Pages Book Club 

Join Avondale Library Adult Department’s new online book club, "Beyond the Pages." Each month participants individually read an e-book selection from the Hoopla app and discuss it together via the Zoom app. In order to access Hoopla, all you need is a library card. You can still access regardless of any fines or if your library card has expired. April’s pick is Tiger Flu by Larissa Lai.

The Zoom book club discussion takes place on Monday, April 20, at 5:00 p.m. and will last around 40 minutes.

Tuesday, April 28, 2:00 p.m. - YA/Middle Grade Book Lovers 

Do you have a younger reader who likes to read young adult or middle grade fiction? Do you wish you or they could discuss all the exciting plot lines and talk about their favorite characters with others? Avondale Library’s new YA/Middle Grade Book Lovers online book club group is for you.

Participants will read a new book each month and meet virtually to discuss the book through the online video conferencing platform, Zoom, which can be used for meetings or live chats. The club will debut on April 28 to discuss This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab.

Join Avondale Library for what promises to be an exciting discussion. If you don’t finish the book, you’re still welcome to participate. Please also share any other teen or middle-grade book that you loved with the club for future discussion consideration.

Copies of the book (ebook or audiobook) are available for free on BPL’s Hoopla app. This group is open to adults and teens.
