As the U.S. prepares to hold National Senior Citizens Day on Friday, August 21, the BPL Diversity Committee is hosting a week-long series of programs designed to help older patrons in a variety of ways- from a pet presentation to self-defense Cane Fu class and online fitness classes.

The week will culminate with a Senior Swag Giveaway at BPL’s regional libraries – Avondale, Five Points West, North Birmingham and Springville Road - on Friday, August 21, National Senior Citizens Day.

National Senior Citizens Day is set aside every year to show the elderly people in our lives we love and appreciate them.

The schedule is as follows:

Monday, August 17, 10:00 a.m.: Hand in Paw presentation via BPL Facebook page 
Hand in Paw is an animal-assisted therapy program, in which pets such as dogs bring joy to patients and senior citizens during site visits. Check out Hand in Paw by clicking here  https://handinpaw.org/

Visit BPL’s four regional libraries - North Birmingham, Five Points West, Springville Road, and North Birmingham - to pick up giveaways donated by BBVA Compass Bank and Positive Maturity, Inc.

In 1988, Senior Citizens Day was proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan to raise awareness about issues that affect senior citizens and their quality of life. For all they do and the good they have done in our communities, senior citizens deserve our thanks.
