2021 Birmingham Public Library Summer Learning Programs Kick Off June 5
Are you ready for more than 40 virtual programs and 14 fun crafts that can be done from the comfort of home this summer? The Birmingham Public Library is here to help with the Summer Learning Program.
The 2021 Summer Learning programs will take place virtually on the Birmingham Public
Library Facebook page. If you miss them live, you can watch them at a later date and time.

There is no advanced registration required for BPL 2021 Summer Learning. Just stop by any of our 18 library locations and pick up a “pledge to read” card.
Featured are 22 youth programs, 7 programs for all ages, 6 adult programs and 5 programs for
teens.
BPL is also hosting 14 virtual craft programs for patrons of all ages. “Grab N Go” craft
kits containing supplies needed to do the activities are available for pickup from all 18 BPL
locations.
Among the highlights:
• 2021 Summer Kickoff Celebration, Saturday, June 5, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the
Central Library parking lot, 2100 Park Place (the only in-person program). Patrons
are invited to join us for crafts, sweet treats, food trucks, and free summer learning swag.
• Five storytimes/singing appearances by Mrs. Eve, the popular former Avondale
Branch Library storyteller who retired last fall. Birmingham’s NBC 13 last year 2
spotlighted Mrs. Eve (COVID-19: Birmingham Public Library System's "Mrs. Eve"
continuing storytelling program online during Coronavirus outbreak)
• Anytime Yoga by instructor Bridgette Rene, every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. – June 6,
June 13, June 20 and June 27. This class offers beginner yoga instructional videos in
which Rene will teach you how yoga exercises can create strength, awareness, and
harmony in the body and mind. Enjoy the benefits from these beginner yoga instructional videos. All bodies are welcome. No experience is necessary.
• Virtual Dance Class for Teens, Thursday, July 8, 10 a.m. Dancing is a fun, energetic full body workout. This dance will increase endurance, improve blood flow and help with balance and coordination. A 30–45-minute dance class can burn just as many calories, if not more, than actually jogging! Let's Dance! Adult
• Did you know the Birmingham Public Library has board games available for
checkout to patrons? Two programs, Pass GO collect $200: Board games in the Library
(Thursday, June 10, 10 a.m.) and Get a Clue: Board Games with the Library (Monday,
June 14 & June 28, 12 p.m.). Instructors will share information on board games you can check out at BPL
and even teach you how to play some of them.
• Animal Tails Sign Language with Tonya, Thursday, July 1, 10 a.m.
Watch and learn how to sign a variety of animal tails and simple words using basic American
Sign Language. Participants are sure to have fun while gaining knowledge on how to
communicate without uttering a sound.

• Have you ever been to the Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve? Then join BPL for
“Time for Tails: A Tricky Turtle Tale,” Wednesday, June 9, 8 a.m. During this virtual
visit to Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve, learn how turtles breathe underwater and enjoy a
clever turtle tale in the shadow puppet theater, featuring a real live turtle escape attempt!
• Science fanatics, join us for this program featuring downtown Birmingham’s
McWane Center, “A Time for Tails: A Wily Weasel Tale,” Wednesday, June 16, 8 a.m.
Go behind the scenes at the McWane Center and meet fantastic ferret Rocky! Keep watching
for a tale about his less well-behaved cousin, Sneaky Weasel, and find out more about
Rocky’s favorite McWane exhibit.
McWane Center will also be featured during Time for Tails: A Shiny Sea Tale
(Audience: Youth), Wednesday, July 14, 8 a.m.
Not every animal has a tail, but they do all have tales to tell. Dive in with us at the McWane
Center and discover some unusual, unbelievable animals in this virtual story adventure.
• Animal lovers will enjoy two virtual visits to the Birmingham Zoo via BPL Summer Learning. Great Kapok Tree, Saturday, June 19, 10 a.m. Join the Birmingham Zoo’s rainforest animals and discover how many animals, big and small, all depend on a single tree in this reading of The Great Kapok Tree.
If you miss it, join us for “Ask the Zoo! Tuesday, June 22, 10 a.m.” Join the Birmingham
Zoo live for a virtual meet and greet with some of our ambassador animals! You’ll get the 3
chance to see our ambassadors up close and personal while learning about them and their
counterparts in the wild. Registration is required.
• Puppet Show, Wednesday, June 30, 8 a.m. Join us for a Shoebox Puppet Show and
learn how to make your own puppet stage!
• Engineer BHM: Game Design, Thursday, June 17, 2 p.m.
Leap into coding by creating your own games with Scratch! This program will be a live
workshop using Zoom and last between an hour and an hour and a half. It is recommended
for middle school students. Participants will need access to email, Zoom, and a laptop/tablet.
The program will have 15 participants max and Zoom links will be sent to the provided
emails in the registration form. Please find the registration form

• Who’s in your tree? Intro to Genealogy, Tuesday, June 8, 12 p.m.
Want to learn how to do genealogical research? Come to this introductory class that will help
get you started on your genealogical journey. The staff in the Southern History Department
covers such topics as vital records, courthouse and church records, and the Federal Census.
• Wellness Wednesdays, June 9, 16, 23, 30, July 7, and July 14, 10 a.m.
Looking to lose weight or stay in shape? Join us Wednesdays at 10 a.m. for a morning
workout from the comfort of your home. Let’s get moving!
• Tech Tuesday, June 15, June 22, June 29, and July 6, & July 13, 2 p.m.
Having trouble with your device? Working on a project and you're stuck on the next step?
Join us for a live Tech Tuesday session and get your questions answered! Registration is
required.
In addition to these virtual programs, don’t forget to participate in BPL’s 14 craft activities.
Participants will learn how to make items such as leather bracelets, door hangers, animal masks,
key chains, and animal bookmarks. Remember to swing by your local BPL branch and pick up “grab n go” kits
containing supplies to create your craft a week before scheduled craft events.
