What does it mean to be healthy? Does the answer simply come down to being physically fit? Certainly, physical well-being is something that we all should aspire to, but there are other dimensions to our lives that need attention and nourishment as well.

The mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being play an important part in determining our overall health. While doctors and other healthcare professionals can assist us in monitoring and improving these aspects, we need to take personal responsibility for making sure that all our health needs are being properly addressed. The practice of taking consistent, deliberate actions to support our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being is a central tenet of a relatively new medical approach called self-care.

Beginning in September 2023, the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) will be hosting a health and wellness series aimed at introducing participants to the concept of self-care. Entitled The Self-Care Mastermind, the series consists of ten programs offered at the Central Library on the second Monday of each month.

Each program will have a specific focus on topics related to physical and psychological health. Topics covered include diet, nutrition, exercise, meditation and relaxation techniques, therapeutic journaling, and personal healthcare advocacy.

The instructor for the Self-Care Mastermind series is Christina (C.J.) Wade. Ms. Wade is a licensed massage therapist and certified health coach. She has owned and operated her own private practice, You Matter Massage and Wellness, in Mountain Brook since 2018. She has a B.A. in Communication Management from UAB, a Master of Arts in Education from UAB, a diploma in Therapeutic Massage from Virginia College, and a certificate in integrative nutrition from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in New York.
