Celebrate National Science Fiction Day With 2 Sci-Fi Recommendations
In honor of National Science Fiction Day (Tuesday, January 2, 2024), I'd like to mention two of my favorite science fiction materials available here at the North Birmingham Regional Branch Library!
- Annihilation (DVD)—This 2018 Alex Garland film is based on the Jeff VanderMeer novel of the same name and is an unnerving look at an expedition that sends a group of all women explorers into the epicenter of an alien anomaly causing plant and animal life to mutate. A movie that will stay with you long after the credits roll, I'd highly recommend this strange example of the New Weird genre.
- Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions (Novella)—If you're in the mood for something more light-hearted, this 1884 novella by Edwin Abbott is about a square who is trying to open the mind of other geometric shapes to the possibility of the fourth dimension. The novel was written as a commentary on the hierarchy/ social structure of the time but has gained fame for its descriptions of various dimensions.
