Celebrate Friends Who Help Make BPL Stronger: National Friends of Libraries Week Oct. 18-24

Written by Roy L. Williams, PR Specialist for Birmingham Public Library

Birmingham, Ala. -Before public libraries can provide the books, DVDs, programs and services that transform lives across the USA, it takes the support of people who believe in the importance of libraries and give their time, energy and resources to help them thrive.

That’s what the Friends Foundation of the Birmingham Public Library and other library foundations provide.

2026 National Friends of Libraries Week began on Sunday, October 18 and continues through Saturday, October 24. The Birmingham Public Library (BPL) is joining libraries across the country in celebrating the volunteers, supporters and advocates who help strengthen their local libraries and connect them with the communities they serve.

BPL deeply appreciates the Friends Foundation of the Birmingham Public Library for its continued support of our 17 locations across the city of Birmingham. If you love books and believe in the importance of libraries, join the cause by making a financial donation or volunteering at the Friends Bookstore in the Central Library downtown.

What does National Friends of the Library Do?

Friends of the Library organizations across the nation support their libraries in many ways, including volunteering, fundraising, advocacy, promoting library services and programs.

BPL’s 5th Annual Classic Cocktails fundraiser is happening at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27 at the downtown Central Library. Friends of the Birmingham Public Library is the main sponsor of the event, which is the kickoff party to Magic City Classic Week as Birmingham prepares to host the annual football game between Alabama A&M and Alabama State University.

National Friends of Libraries Week is a great time to:

  • Celebrate your Friends and recognize their contributions to BPL.
  • Learn more about getting involved with Friends of the Library.
  • Show your appreciation for the volunteers and supporters who help BPL serve the community.
  • Spread the word about the important role Friends play in supporting libraries.

Whether you are a longtime library visitor or someone discovering BPL for the first time, National Friends of Libraries Week is a great time to connect with us.
