Using Your Library Card to Read Magazines

You’ve probably often heard that your library card is a bargain. There are many reasons it is. First of all, it is free if you live in Jefferson County. Also, because the libraries in Jefferson County created Public Libraries of Jefferson County, you have access to all of the resources in the libraries including books, CDs, DVDs, etc. Other great resources are our databases. To access them, visit and find the databases button.

The databases cover a variety of topics but one in particular is very useful and a real bargain. It is called MasterFILE PremierMasterFILE Premier contains full text for thousands of general reference magazines and publications and covers a wide-range of subject areas including business, health, education, general science, multicultural issues, and much more.  Over 1,700 magazines are indexed. One way I use it is to read issues of recently published magazines. You can type in the name of the magazine you would like to read and submit. The most recently indexed articles will appear, usually last month's.

So visit our virtual library and take advantage of  the resources available to you as a member of the Birmingham Public Library.
