BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Birmingham Public Library is thrilled to announce a powerful new addition to its digital lineup: kweliTV, a dynamic, Black-owned streaming service bringing authentic Black stories from around the globe right to your screen.
With just a BPL library card, patrons now have free access to more than 800 award-winning films, thought-provoking documentaries, eye-catching animation, and inspiring children’s shows — all celebrating the rich and diverse voices of the African Diaspora.
“This partnership supports our commitment to cultural learning, inclusion and media literacy,” said Caleb West, head of the BPL Collections Department. “We’re excited to offer our patrons meaningful stories that celebrate the richness and diversity of the African Diaspora.”
kweliTV (which means “truth” in Swahili) is reshaping the streaming experience by amplifying stories often left out of mainstream platforms. Viewers can explore powerful narratives from the U.S., Africa, Latin America, Europe, and the Caribbean across genres including drama, sci-fi, history, wellness, education, and more — all from the comfort of home, on mobile, or at any library branch.
“We’re honored to work with Birmingham Public Library to bring culturally rich, independent Black stories to their community,” said DeShuna Spencer, Founder & CEO of kweliTV. “Public libraries are vital gateways to knowledge, and this partnership ensures that more people can see themselves reflected on screen.”
Birmingham Public Library is proud to join a growing number of institutions bringing truth-telling, globally conscious storytelling to their communities. Get your library card and start streaming today — because your story deserves to be seen.
