BPL Presents “American Shrapnel: The Weaponization of Eric Robert Rudolph", Alabama Media Group Podcast Launch & Panel Discussion
What: "American Shrapnel: The Weaponization of Eric Robert Rudolph - Podcast Launch and Panel Discussion from Murrow-Winning Alabama Media Group
This gripping series examines the chilling story of Eric Robert Rudolph, the convicted bomber behind a wave of terror in the South during the 1990s. From the 1996 Atlanta Olympic bombing (the largest pipe bomb in U.S. history) to attacks on an abortion clinic and a lesbian nightclub, Rudolph’s crimes shocked the nation and baffled federal investigators.
The story turned to Birmingham on January 29, 1998, when Rudolph bombed the New Woman All Women Health Care clinic. His escape might have allowed him to continue his deadly campaign, if not for the quick thinking of UAB student Jermaine Hughes, who followed Rudolph and provided a license plate number that triggered the largest manhunt in American history.
In a panel moderated by journalist Glenny Brock, reporters Archibald, Andrews, and Hammontree will explore Rudolph’s five years on the run, his eventual capture, and the deeper forces of extremism, hate, and Christian nationalism that fueled his violence, forces that still echo today.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions during an audience Q&A.
