Birmingham, AL - Nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and residents of Mountain Brook are invited to an engaging exploration of local parks that blend natural beauty with fascinating history. On Saturday, August 2, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the Birmingham Public Library Department of Archives & Manuscripts will host an illuminating talk, The History of Mountain Brook Parks, in the 4th Floor Arrington Auditorium of the BPL Research Building downtown.
Presenter Shanda Williams, Parks and Recreation Superintendent for the City of Mountain Brook, will guide attendees through the stories behind three of the city’s most unique green spaces:
🌳 Jemison Park - Mountain Brook’s most beloved green space, known for its winding trails, scenic bridges, and peaceful creekside views. It serves as a living memory of Mountain Brook’s love for nature.
🔥 The Furnace Trail - A hidden historic gem where nature meets the past, featuring remnants of a Civil War-era blast furnace tucked into the landscape. The trail is a hauntingly beautiful relic of Alabama’s industrial history.
🎖️ Alabama Veterans Memorial Park - A powerful, reflective tribute honoring every Alabama veteran lost in service since World War I. Visitors can view the Hall of Honor pavilion, stroll the landscaped grounds, and connect with the powerful stories of courage and sacrifice that shaped Alabama’s history.
In addition to these highlights, Williams will share insights into other parks and scenic trails throughout Mountain Brook and provide updates on exciting future improvements. It’s the perfect opportunity to discover new spots to explore with family and friends or to see familiar parks through a fresh historical lens.
