Birmingham, Ala. - Birmingham Public Library (BPL) invites the public to a timely author talk featuring journalist and author Sharon Udasin, co-author of the investigative book Poisoning the Well: How Forever Chemicals Contaminated America, This free discussion will take place on Saturday, February 28, 2026, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Central Library’s Arrington Auditorium downtown.

Released in April 2025, Poisoning the Well is co-written by Udasin and fellow investigative reporter Rachel Frazin. The book explores the widespread use of “forever chemicals,” known as PFAS - long-lasting synthetic compounds found in many everyday consumer products. The book reveals how these chemicals have contaminated drinking water systems across the nation, raising concerns about long-term health impacts on nearby residents.

One of the book’s major case studies is especially relevant to Alabama, focusing on the dumping of toxic chemicals into the Tennessee River during the 20th century and the lasting environmental and public health concerns affecting communities across North Alabama.

During her presentation, Udasin will discuss the research behind the book and examine how corporate negligence and inadequate government oversight contributed to contamination that continues to impact communities today.

Residents and community leaders concerned about environmental safety, public health, or the future of clean water in our communities should make plans to attend. The discussion will also explore how public awareness and civic engagement can help prevent similar environmental crises in the future.
