Join BPL's Bards & Brews Open Mic at Woodlawn Theatre This Friday, November 1
Like spoken word poetry? Join the Birmingham Public Library’s Bards & Brews at 6:30 pm this Friday, Nov. 1 at Woodlawn Theatre, 5503 1st Ave. North. It will be the first time Bards has gone there.
Yoshi, who won the Bards Poetry Slam for the first time in May 2024 and finished 2nd in the September slam, will be the featured poet.
“We're excited to partner with the Birmingham Public Library as our passion for community development is in line with the work of the public library system,” said Will Mason, owner of Woodlawn Theatre. “Education is a huge component of my work with Mason Music and Mason Music Foundation, and to put a cherry on top, my mom was a librarian her entire working life, so I figured we should probably say yes to this opportunity.”
Bekah Fox, general manager of Woodlawn Theatre, said hosting Bards & Brews Open Mic Night this Friday fits perfectly with Woodlawn Theatre "because it encompasses the essence of what we do here in Woodlawn: hosting meaningful experiences for our neighbors and beyond, adding to the vibrancy of our historic commercial district and strengthening the infrastructure for the music & arts scene within Birmingham."
"We have known about this unique programming as it pops up in various spaces and places around Birmingham, like local branches or The Flourish, and are honored to be able to bring that over to the East side of town," Fox said.
Woodlawn Theatre is a 250 capacity music venue and private event space on 1st Ave North in the heart of the historic district of Woodlawn.
Opening it's doors in 2023, Woodlawn Theatre aims to serve the local Birmingham music scene as well as the Woodlawn community by hosting events of all kinds - concerts, comedy, weddings, corporate events, parties and more.
Woodlawn Theatre has a full service bar, a stage with a built in PA system, and an 18 foot motorized screen and projector.
"The heart of Woodlawn Theatre is to build community through intentional place-making and programming, Fox said. "We are proud to celebrate our 1 year anniversary with a party and fundraiser on November 15. More info is on woodlawntheatrebham.com."
