Interview Ayurella Horn-Muller, author of Devoured: The Extraordinary Story of Kudzu, the Vine that Ate the South, online at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22.
The BPL Department of Archives & Manuscripts is hosting a virtual Earth Day interview with Ayurella Horn-Muller, author of Devoured: The Extraordinary Story of Kudzu, the Vine that Ate the South. See flyer above with link on how to scan and join the discussion.
The book detangles the complicated story of the South's fickle relationship with kudzu, chronicling the ways the boundless weed has evolved over centuries, and dissecting what climate change could mean for its future across the United States. Weaving rigorous research with poignant storytelling, Horn-Muller reveals how the "vine that ate the South" became a vessel to "other" those with origins beyond U.S. borders. A timely narrative, Devoured challenges readers to reconsider how we decide who and what belongs in the changing landscapes around us.
Ayurella Horn-Muller is a staff writer at Grist, where she covers climate, food and agriculture. Prior to that, she reported for Axios and Climate Central, and produced broadcast news at WPLG. Her reporting has won multiple honors from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Green Eyeshade Awards. She has completed media fellowships with the Society of Environmental Journalists, Metcalf Institute,
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Oregon State University.
