The Birmingham Public Library is joining nonprofits and other organizations worldwide on Tuesday, May 5, 2020, to participate in #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day to spread generosity and join together to support organizations that are helping others in many ways during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a Q & A interview, BPL Director of Library Development Catherine Frey talked to Bessie Miller, BPL Regional Manager and Chief Strategist of BPL's Summer Learning programs, about virtual programs and other services our 19 libraries across the City of Birmingham have in place to assist the public. She also discussed that #GivingTuesdayNow is a way to help BPL continue to provide free educational programs 24-7 for those in need.
• How has BPL adapted to this pandemic to continue serving the public?
Miller: The building may be closed, however BPL remains open online 24-7 for all patrons. Patrons can read an eBooks, listen to music, watch a movie, learn a language, take a career development class, and research their genealogy. Did I mention all the resources are available for FREE?
• Describe some of the unique programs BPL is offering virtually for the public.
Miller: Storytime with Mrs. Eve, Bards and Brews Virtual, Photo Challenges, Book Clubs and Film Clubs at Avondale Library , Genealogy, BPL Local Author Reading Challenges, and more!
• I understand BPL partnered with other City of Birmingham agencies to provide a stay at home activity guide to entertain kids, teens and adults. Share that link.
Miller: The link for the Stay at Home Activity Guide is www.birminghamal.gov/stayathome. There are activities for all ages, from toddlers to senior citizens.
• BPL’s Summer Learning activities begin in less than a month. What are the plans for summer?
Miller: This year Summer Learning will be hosted virtually. Don’t worry! The library will still include fan favorite local performers and amazing prizes. We will host daily activities beginning June 8th! So, Get Ready to Imagine your Story! Registration begins on May 16th!
• What type of online help is available on BPL website to help students finishing school year virtually?
Miller: I am a personal fan of Virtual Live Homework Help Alabama; students can gain access through the library database. However, the library offers additional platforms for all learners including Learning Express Library and Udemy.
• How can I get a library card now online?
Miller: E-library cards are now available on the library homepage at www.cobpl.org
• How long have you been a librarian – and what do you enjoy most about being a librarian?
Miller: I have worked in the library for almost 20 years in some capacity. My very first job was at the Birmingham Public Library. I enjoy being able to provide programs and resources to EVERYONE!
• Why do you feel it is important for the public to support the library?
Miller: The library is one of the few places where you can educate yourself for free. Patrons have the ability to research a new topic, learn a new skill, apply for a passport and even get married.
