Things to do at the Birmingham Public Library May 5-10 (Besides Checking Out Books)


                                                        

The Birmingham Public Library has 16 locations across the city - offering far more than just a place to check out books. Every week, our libraries throughout  Birmingham provide free programs for patrons of all ages - from arts and crafts, to line dance classes and chess for kids.

If you are looking for fun activities for the entire family, from kids to senior citizens, go to our BPL website or any BPL location to register now for 2025 Summer Reading. Join us at our 2025 Birmingham Public Library Summer Reading Kickoff Party taking place at Avondale Park from 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. this Saturday, May 10

Get ready for a day packed with fun for all ages! We have an exciting lineup of activities in store, including an inflatable, a book walk, fish for chips, an obstacle course, face painting, crafts, a tossing game, sock toss, tons of prizes, Chick-fil-A, a farm bus, a balloon artist, live music, adult indoor activities, Kona Ice Snow cones, a game truck, and much more! 

Here is a look at some of our fun programs happening at BPL during the week of May 5-10, 2025: 


Sign up begins at 9:30 a.m. Each family that signs up will leave with a bag of food from our food bank partners. Participation is first-come, first-served until our supplies run out.


Cinco de Mayo


Let's have fun using bright colorful paper that's cut into a sombrero/poncho then decorate it creatively.  


Ojo de Dios Weaving: A Cinco de Mayo Craft, 4:00 p.m., East Ensley Branch Library

Create a traditional Mexican ornament in celebration of Cinco de Mayo! 



Aerobics and Line Dance Classes, Various BPL locations


Want to learn how to do the latest line dances -or to improve your skills on old line dances? Join us weekly at Five Points West Regional Library. No experience necessary.



Yoga Delight, Wednesday, May 7, East Ensley Branch Library

Join us and learn about yoga.





Mary's Chair Aerobics class, held every Thursday, allows adults to Have fun while getting fit with a lively class of chair aerobics. Let's get your workout on and exercise at your own pace! 


Let's get the mornings started with a little line dancing! Join us and learn the latest line dances in the morning!

Celebrate Mother's Day at BPL 

** Mother's Day Grab N Go Kit,  All week during library hours Monday, May 5-Friday, May 9, Powderly Branch Library

Celebrate the Moms in your life with Powderly  Branch's Grab N Go! Pick up a special MOM/WOW cardstock printout to color and personalize. The clever design spells mom on one side and wow on the other side when flipped - because moms are both!


Join us at Titusville Branch as we celebrate the special role mothers play by hosting a community lunch and bingo. Registration is required as space is limited. For information, call (205) 322-1140. 

  


To celebrate Mother's Day as well as other special occasions, the family can work together to create this beautiful hand-made 3-D greeting card. This activity encourages family involvement.


Get mom and other family members some sweets and baked goods this week. Each week a selection of sweet treats and baked goods will be out and available for anyone who checks out the required number of items. Enjoy some sweet reads and some sweet treats! Anything that can be checked out counts as an item! 


Mother's Day Pipe Cleaner Bouquet, 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 6 & 4:00 p.m. Thursday, May 8, East Ensley Branch Library 

Make the perfect bouquet that never wilts. Join East Ensley Branch in creating beautiful flower bouquets out of pipe cleaners. 


Create your own beautiful lily flower using your own handprint as a gift for Mother's Day! This program provides an opportunity to express creativity and observe a holiday.

Crafts and Crochet at various BPL locations This Week


Chat with fellow crafters, or learn how to get started with crocheting. 


Gather together every week with other adults at thee Springville Road Regional Library to learn how to make a craft and enjoy good conversation! 


Join us at Smithfield Branch every week to learn about the art of crocheting. 


Join Miss Lori for a different craft every Tuesday. You can grab & go or stay and create while supplies last.

Coloring (for adults)


Did you know that coloring for adults can be fun? Join us for our weekly coloring program. Patrons will use their fingers to create a fun mess-free paint creation on canvas. 


Bring your kids to North Avondale Branch as we chalk on the sidewalk, blow bubbles, jump rope and have a snack afterwards. 



The Self-Care MasterMind: Community Edition 2025 program series is held on the first floor of the Central Library on the first Tuesday of every month. Monthly topics will address diet, nutrition, exercise, meditation, relaxation, journaling, and much more! The instructor for the Self-Care Mastermind: Community Edition series is Christina (C. J.) Wade. Ms. Wade is a licensed massage therapist and certified health coach.

Titusville Diaper Resource Day, Titusville Community Resource Day & Titusville Senior Resource Day, Tuesday, May 6-Thursday, May 8, Titusville Branch Library 

** During Titusville Diaper Resource Day from 10 a.m. - noon on Tuesday, May 6, Titusville Branch partners with Bundles of Hope to provide diaper donations to patrons who register and check out 5 books. 

** During Titusville Senior Resource Day from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, Titusville Branch Library, senior participants will enjoy interacting with vendors who will provide information and resources such as medical consultations, food distribution, utilities assistance, and other essential services for patrons at Titusville Branch. 


Patrons who register may receive boxes of non-perishable food items, in order to bring support and relief to community members who may be in need.


Volunteers Lawyers Birmingham will offer free legal advice on civil legal matters.





 During Chess for Kids, students learn to play chess during free lessons taught by members of New South Coalition. There will be snacks and prizes.

** Sand Art Pens for Mothers, Thursday, May 8, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m., Woodlawn Branch Library

Make your own sand art pens. Patrons will get a large pen and fill it with colored sand.

** Chill Mode, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 9, Smithfield Branch Library

 Chill Mode involves gaming activities for youth.
