BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Birmingham Public Library (BPL) invites the community to experience the city’s newest center for digital learning and innovation: the North Star Learning Lab inside the North Birmingham Regional Library, 2501 31st Ave. North.

 A public Open House will be held Wednesday, November 19, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., offering residents a first look at this transformative new space built to support digital access, workforce readiness, and creative exploration.

Designed as a free, open-access technology lab available during all library hours, the North Star Learning Lab represents a major investment in the future of North Birmingham. The lab will serve students, job seekers, entrepreneurs, and lifelong learners by offering modern tools and hands-on learning opportunities in a welcoming neighborhood setting.

During the Open House, guests will be able to rotate through interactive learning stations and meet the partners helping power the lab’s programs, including Ed Farm, the City of Birmingham, and local community mentors. The event will highlight the range of free digital learning opportunities that will be available year-round. 

Activities will include:

  • Hands-On Demonstrations: Coding tutorials, podcasting technology, digital storytelling tools, and more
  • Meet the Mentors: Instructors and tech leaders from Ed Farm, City of Birmingham innovation staff, and neighborhood partners
  • Food & Networking: Light dinner and refreshments provided

Supporting Digital Equity in North Birmingham

The North Star Learning Lab was created in direct response to expanding digital skills needs across Birmingham. From job applications and online certifications to entrepreneurship and creative media, the lab provides access to resources many residents may not have at home. By embedding this technology hub inside a trusted neighborhood library, the Birmingham Public Library strengthens its role as a frontline partner in digital equity, education, and economic opportunity.
