Your Connection Starts Here: Free Wi-Fi, Computers & Training at BPL

No Computer, No Wi-Fi? No Worries: BPL Has You Covered

Libraries across the country are stepping up to bridge the digital divide, and the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) is proud to be leading the way in metro Birmingham.

Not everyone has internet or a computer at home, but at BPL, that’s never a barrier. Every day, all 18 of our locations provide free Wi-Fi and public computer access during open hours. Whether you’re a student finishing an assignment, a job seeker completing applications, or a lifelong learner exploring new skills, BPL is here to make sure you have the tools you need to connect, create, and succeed.

Here’s how we at BPL, and libraries like us across the country, are filling this vital need:

  • Wi-Fi Upgrades
BPL recently rolled out a new, faster network for patrons: Library Guest (password: Connect2025). These upgrades ensure reliable high-speed access across our branches so you can browse, stream, and work without interruption. Other libraries, like Columbus Metropolitan Library, have made similar improvements with large-scale wireless upgrades, showing a nationwide push for better access.
  • Mobile Hotspot Lending
Portable hotspots are one of the most popular items in BPL’s Library of Things collection. Families borrow them to bring internet access home, helping students with schoolwork and keeping households connected. We’ve expanded this service to meet demand.
  • Expanding Digital Resources
Beyond devices, BPL has grown its online collections to include tutoring, job-seeking tools, and skill-building platforms. These resources are free with your library card and available anytime, anywhere you have internet access.
  • Free Computer Classes
For seniors and anyone who isn’t yet comfortable with technology, BPL offers free computer classes throughout the month. The Central Library downtown and the Five Points West Regional Library are just two of the locations where patrons can learn essential computer skills in a friendly, supportive environment.
  • BPL Bookmobile: Wi-Fi on the Move
The BPL Bookmobile doesn’t just bring books—it brings connectivity. By traveling to community centers and local events, it extends Wi-Fi access beyond library walls, reaching even more of our neighbors where they are.

Access to technology and the internet opens doors to education, employment, healthcare, and opportunity. By providing free computers, Wi-Fi, hotspots, classes, and digital tools, BPL is helping bridge Birmingham’s digital divide and ensuring that no one is left behind.

If you or someone you know needs internet, computer access, or just a little guidance in learning new technology skills, the library is here for you. Stop by any of our branches, log on, and take advantage of the tools and support waiting for you at BPL.
