BPL Author Spotlight: Ottessa Moshfegh

Image
Ottessa Moshfegh's debut book, "Eileen," won the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award in 2015 . By Catherine Oseas|BPL Archives Department   Ottessa Moshfegh is an American author. Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1981, Moshfegh published her first novel, Eileen , in 2015.  Eileen won the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award , was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and was a fiction finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her subsequent novels have been in a similar style to her first, taking a first person narrative to an otherworldly dimension.  “Moshfegh’s characters tend to be amoral, frank, bleakly funny, very smart, and perverse in their motivations, in ways that destabilize the reader’s assumptions about what is ugly, what is desirable, what is permissible, and what is real” (The New Yorker, July 2, 2018).  If you are looking for an interesting read, I recommend starting with Moshfegh’s second  novel, My Year of Rest and Relaxation . Book Review: "The Searcher" by Tana French

Image
By Jill Lollar | Central Library Circulation/Information Desk  Tana French is a writer who is known for twisting plots, brutal psychological portraits, and haunting endings. In her most recent book, she is trying her hand at something new, a Wild West story transposed on the beautiful, rugged Irish countryside.  French, the author of the Dublin Murder Squad Series, has penned a standalone novel entitled The Searcher . It follows the journey of Cal Hooper, who is a retired Chicago police officer, in pursuit of an idyllic retirement.  Instead of finding peace and tranquility, his days are plagued by eccentric villagers, missing teenagers, long kept secrets, superstitions, and mysteriously slaughtered sheep.   If you are a fan of classic UK village mysteries or Western novels, you might enjoy this unique blend. You can find it on BPL’s Best Sellers list or in our Central Library Adult Fiction Departments.  Check out The Searcher and other books by Ta...

Book Review: "Toads and Diamonds" by Heather Tomlinson

Image
By Noelle Gueringer| Titusville Branch Library Fairytales: stories full of magic, wonder, and life lessons. Old fairytales have a tendency to raise the beautiful and gracious on a pedestal, letting their happiness shine bright by story’s end. The ugly are meant to be wicked and their fates reflect their looks and mannerisms. The morals are clear-cut and concise: be kind and beautiful and you will be blessed. If you have a sharp tongue and are disagreeable, your punishment will make for an unhappy end. New fairytales are more complex and we find that fate is no longer so strongly tied to the color of our skin or our satirical nature.  Toads and Diamonds , a retelling of the French fairytale by Heather Tomlinson. takes the old story ( originally written by Charles Perrault ) and flips it on its head. Set in India, this story is about two girls, one beautiful and kind and the other plain-looking but clever. They each meet a fairy and, through their own deeds, are bestowed a gif...

Image
By Linda McFarland| Titusville Branch Library   If you like adventure and action, Lee Child has a series for you!  Our hero, Jack Reacher, born into a military family, is a former Army Military Police Major. After he is “downsized”, he roams the States discovering areas he missed out on while moving from station to station around the world.  In Die Trying , Reacher coming to the aid of a woman using a crutch with her dry cleaning, accidently gets caught up in a kidnapping. Armed gunmen force FBI agent Holly Johnson and Reacher into a car, and the drama begins. They are handcuffed together in the back of a van, and end up in a high mountain setting, in the evil hands of Beau Borken, the vicious militia leader.  Written in 1997, our villain bears similarities to a 21st century political figure. Reacher, gifted with near-omnipotence, stays one step ahead, most of the time, using psychology, and his large, strong stature to outwit the enemy. You can check o...

BPL Movie Review: "Bringing Out the Dead"

Image
"In light of today’s medical circumstances amidst the  COVID-19 pandemic,   Bringing Out the Dead  also made me realize that there are only a handful of films that explore the relentless chaos that comes with being an EMT or a paramedic. They are society’s heroes right now, and they should be."-From Movie Review by William Anthony of Central Library Citizens Services Department By William Anthony, Citizens Services Department| Central Library Bringing Out the Dead involves an unlikely collaboration. Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese directs the eccentric, typically over-the-top Nicolas Cage in this movie about a sleepless, fed-up paramedic who must endure the continuous, demanding stress of his job. In fact, this is the only time that Scorsese and Cage have worked together on a film.  As an actor, Cage is notorious for overacting or just not hesitating to go completely insane. However, his role as Frank Pierce actually helps him to restrain his standard i...

An illustration of Mars Rover Perseverance landing safely on the red planet.  By Alvin Guillen - Library Assistant III |Springville Road Regional Library  Today, Friday, August 6, marks the ninth anniversary of exploration by NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars. The car-sized robot launched from NASA's Jet Propulsion laboratory in California November 2011 and landed inside Mars' Gale Crater on August 6, 2012. Curiosity has played a major role in helping scientists understand the habitat of Mars and how it has evolved.  Space exploration by NASA on Mars captivated the nation earlier this year when NASA'S Perseverance rover landed on the red planet. When I first began writing this blog in February, NASA’s Perseverance rover had been on the planet Mars for 5 days, 4 hours, and 45 minutes. It successfully landed on the planet on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at 3:55 p.m. EST. Early today, NASA's official Perseverance Twitter account released photos after the rover drilled its...
