Birmingham Public Library Honoring Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. With Lectures, Crafts This Week

 


The Birmingham Public Library is offering several programs and activities this week to celebrate the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King., Jr. All BPL locations will be closed for the 2025 MLK Federal Holiday on Monday, January 20. 

BPL Activities will include Begin the Day: The 22nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture at 1:00 p.m. this Saturday, January 18, in the Central Library and an MLK’s legacy talk at Powderly Branch Library at 11:00 a.m. this Thursday, January 16 by Charles Woods III of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

 King played a prominent role in Birmingham in the fight against racism during the Civil Rights Movement. His efforts led to King winning the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. A copy of the MLK Letter from a Birmingham Jail is housed in the BPL Archives Department's world-renowned civil rights collection.

 Ten clues related to important and interesting facts about Dr. King have been hidden in the library. Correctly answer all 10 questions and be entered into a drawing for a book prize pack! The winners will be announced on Thursday, January 16. 

Club Create, Wednesday, January 15, 2:00 p.m.

Join Avondale Regional Library for Club Create, our weekly arts and crafts workshop for adults. We'll be creating Peace Dove Tissue Paper Mosaics in honor of MLK Day.

Join M. Dominique Villanueva, co-founder of Fountain Heights Farms, for an inspiring and thought-provoking lecture on how urban farming serves as a pathway to liberation and justice. In this talk, Dominique explores the historical legacy of Black agriculture, the transformative power of reclaiming land, and the interconnectedness of collective liberation.

 Learn how initiatives like Fountain Heights Farms are fostering community resilience, food justice, and cross-community solidarity. Discover why supporting mutual aid, urban farming, and land justice efforts is essential for building a future where everyone can thrive. Together, we'll reflect on how small actions can create powerful, lasting change.




 MLK Coloring Activity, Thursday, January 16, 3:00-4:00 p.m

Join us as we color pages of a Martin Luther King Jr. mosaic poster, after coloring is complete youth will receive a prize.




Join us at the Powderly Branch Public Library for a special Senior Storytime dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. Our guest speaker is Charles Woods, III, Education Trainer & Program Director at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. He will discuss Dr. King's legacy, message, and general aspects of the Civil Rights Movement. Please join us to honor the past, reflect on the present, and inspire hope for the future through the power of storytelling. Refreshments will be served.

 MLK DAY: Peace Wreath Creation Grab-N-Go Craft, 10:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m, Tuesday, January 14 

Come make an MLK Day Peace Wreath Creation Grab-n-go craft.





Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by having the kids share their dreams for the world and create a collage of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Discussion questions are included to allow the family to share thoughts about his dream actualizing in today’s world.
