Black History Assignments? Woodlawn Library Hosting Student Projects Fair on February 18
On Tuesday, February 18, the Woodlawn Branch is hosting a Black History Month Student Project Fair from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. Students needing help on Black History projects are invited to stop by Woodlawn Branch, 5709 First Ave. North.
Woodlawn’s library staff looks forward to answering questions and providing research assistance for Black History Month projects at this event and throughout the month. One of our staff members has created a display featuring relevant titles. One of local artist and former Woodlawn Branch Manager/Librarian William Darby’s fantastic library-inspired artworks will be on display in the front window all month long.
A strength of the Woodlawn collection is the strong representation of Black literature and nonfiction books relevant to Black history, including figures integral to the Civil Rights Movement, Black icons of sports, literature, and pop culture, and other important voices past and present.
Woodlawn Library's juvenile collection features classic works such as the award-winning Martin’s Big Words (Rappaport and Collier, 2001) and Russell Freedman’s (2006) Freedom Walkers: The Story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
More recent biographical works are also available for checkout, including:
* Libba: The Magnificent Musical Life of Elizabeth Cotton (Laura Veirs and Tatyana Fazlaleizadeh, 2018)
* The award winning Sweet Justice: Georgia Gilmore and the Montgomery Bus Boycott (Mara Rockliff and R. Gregory Christie, 2022)
* Audrey Vernick and Cannaday Chapman’s All Star: How Larry Doby Smashed the Color Barrier in Baseball (2022).
Woodlawn Branch's biography section includes series such as Hip-Hop & R&B, Black Culture, Black Music, & Storytelling, and Great African Americans with books on a range of historic figures.
Woodlawn Branch's adult nonfiction and budding teen nonfiction sections also offer a wealth of potentially relevant materials on Black History in both print biography and documentary DVD formats.
No matter what Black History Month information you are looking for this month, Woodlawn and all the BPL branches look forward to serving you!
