2025 BPL Local Authors Expo Spotlight: Dana Bari

A Passion Rekindled: Dana Bari Writes Romance for Readers Over 50

For author Dana Bari, storytelling began with a love of romance novels, historical fiction  and a desire to see more stories that reflect her own stage of life. After years of reading about twenty- and thirty-somethings finding love, she decided to write a romance that celebrates passion, courage, and new beginnings after fifty.

Her debut novel, The Risk of Loving You: When Danger Meets Desire, tells the story of a 57-year-old widow who unexpectedly falls in love again with a 60-year-old bachelor. But just as their relationship begins to blossom, a dangerous secret threatens to unravel everything they’ve found together. It’s a story of second chances, resilience, and rediscovering love when you least expect it.

A proud Bessemer native, the author's pen name Dana Bari means "wise originator" and was inspired by choosing a name to reflect her goals as an author.

The Birmingham area’s blend of Southern warmth and modern vitality shapes her storytelling voice, one that blends timeless romance with a grounded, authentic Southern charm.

Come meet Dana Bari at the Birmingham Public Library 2025 Local Authors Expo, presented by the Tri-County (Alabama) Chapter of The Links, Inc. on Saturday, November 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Central Library in downtown Birmingham, 2100 Park Place. She will join 30 authors from across Alabama sharing their books, stories, and creative journeys. This year's theme is "Local to Global."

What inspired you to start writing?

Dana Bari: As an avid reader of romance novels, I noticed a significant lack of stories featuring characters in my age group. This observation, combined with the therapeutic process of writing after experiencing a personal loss, deeply inspired me to begin crafting my own narratives.

Could you tell us more about "The Risk of Loving You: When Danger Meets Desire"?

Dana Bari: The Risk of Loving You: When Danger Meets Desire is a story centered on a 57-year-old widow who unexpectedly finds love again with a 60-year-old bachelor. Just as their relationship begins to blossom, they face a formidable danger that threatens not only their budding romance but also his family's long-standing legacy.

How has your experience as an Alabama (or Birmingham) author shaped your voice or storytelling?

Dana Bari: My stories are deeply rooted in the Birmingham Metro area because this is my home and the place I know intimately. My storytelling voice is authentically shaped by the unique sights, familiar sounds, and the soul of this region, allowing me to bring a genuine local perspective to my work.

If you could share one message from your book with the world, what would it be?

Dana Bari: The core message I wish to share is that being over 50 does not signify a decline in our lives; rather, it can be a vibrant new chapter. Even in the aftermath of tragedy, our subsequent chapters can be just as rich, loving, and fulfilling as our earlier ones. It’s a testament to the idea that we truly can live our best lives at any age.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to aspiring writers?

Dana Bari: My advice to aspiring writers is to embrace your unique voice and use it to authentically tell the stories that you yourself want to read. Don't be afraid to explore themes and perspectives that resonate deeply with you, especially if they seem unpopular or strange.

Where can readers find your book?

Dana Bari: Readers can find "The Risk of Loving You: When Danger Meets Desire" on Amazon, available in both paperback and e-book formats.
