North Birmingham Library October Staff Book & DVD Picks

Halloween favorites from the staff of North Birmingham Regional Library.

We love spooky season here at the North Birmingham Regional Branch Library

Here are some fun and exciting staff favorites for the month of October:

This novel by Christina Henry introduces us to protagonist Harry Adams: someone who has always loved horror movies. Harry gets a gig cleaning the house of a famous horror director and soon discovers the house holds more secrets than she ever anticipated.

This fascinating nonfiction selection delves into the world of Stephen King characters and gives readers a good balance of both criticism and interpretation of King’s work. The book also comes with a variety of wonderful illustrations for your viewing pleasure.

This classic work of horror fiction (1897) by Bram Stoker introduced the world to what is now considered to be the most famous and widely known vampire story of all time. If you haven’t read this timeless classic then I strongly suggest you pick it up and give it a try.

This thrilling Mexican Gothic horror by Isabel Cañas takes place right after the Mexican War of Independence and introduces readers to all sorts of supernatural/ paranormal happenings, historical intrigue, the battle between good vs evil, and much much more. We love a good horror/ historical fiction, don’t we folks?

DVDs

This horrifying look at the dysfunction and ultimate breakdown of a family who can’t seem to own up to any of its sins or misdeeds is easily the most disturbing horror movie on our list. The tension is expertly built and the disturbing moments will get into your head and stay there long after the film has ended.

This Tim Burton selection is much more light hearted than our last pick and features the tried and true tale of a boy and his dog. The claymation is beautiful and lovingly crafted while the Danny Elfman score adds a wonderful touch of whimsy. Great to watch with your kids!

- A light hearted and modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet, this charming romantic comedy features a love story between a human and a zombie. It also gives us a pitch perfect performance from Nicholas Hoult and an enjoyable bouncy soundtrack. A good movie to watch with your significant other
