Bards & Brews Grand Slam Awarding Prizes Totaling $1,000 To 3 Poets This Friday, September 1

Bards & Brews Grand Slam is our biggest slam of the year! Three poets will win prizes totaling to a $1,000.00 and the crowd gets to decide who wins.

Bards & Brews Grand Slam is happening this Friday, September 1, at the Central Library. Registration to compete in the slam starts at 6:00 p.m. and the slam starts at 6:30 p.m. with an opening performance from local drummer Barry Johnson and beers from Good People Brewing Company.

  • Details: 10 talented poets will compete with original poetry for the chance to win cash prizes totaling $1,000.00 (1st place: $500.00, 2nd place: $300.00, 3rd place: $200.00), and guest judges from the crowd decide the victor. Registration starts at 6:00 p.m., and the slam starts at 6:30 p.m. Poets must register to compete and is available to the first 10 poets who have their photo I.D. and pay the $5.00 registration fee. Admission to attend is free. Attendees must be 18+ to attend and 21+ with proof of I.D. to drink. Bards & Brews is sponsored by the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

A poetry slam is a spoken word competition where competitors are eliminated each round based on the scores from the guest judges chosen from the crowd. Poets must perform within a three-minute time limit and be ready to compete for three rounds with original poetry. The poets with the three highest scores at the end of the three rounds will win their respective prizes.

Prizes are listed as follows:

  • 1st Place: $500.00
  • 2nd Place: $300.00
  • 3rd Place: $200.00

Five judges are chosen from the crowd to rank the competing poets, but the audience can try to persuade the judges to change their scores by booing or cheering for the poets on stage.

Admission to Bards & Brews is free and open to the public. Must be 18+ to enter and 21+ to drink with proof of I.D.

Barry Johnson is our musical guest entertainer, and Good People Brewing Company is providing brews.

Good People Brewing Company is providing beers that night. Located downtown across from Regions Field, Good People Brewing Company creates an inviting atmosphere to sample unique beers with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. Dogs are welcome, too! Stop by to get their Funk Farm barrel aged sour beers that you can only get in their taproom, or their resident food truck, Hotbox, serving inventive takes on handheld classics at their brewery Wednesday through Sunday.
