Public Invited to Artists’ Reception This Saturday, May 4, at the Birmingham Public Library

 


Please come out to the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) this Saturday, May 4, for a reception honoring the artists whose works are featured in three exhibitions at BPL. The reception will take place in the Fourth Floor Gallery at the Central Library  from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Meet and converse with artists working in a wide variety of media, including cast metal, sculpture, painting, drawing, photo-collage, and more!

A World in a Grain of Sand: Art by Studio By The Tracks Artists was installed in April in celebration of Autism Acceptance Month. Studio By The Tracks (SBTT) is a community arts studio serving artists on the autism spectrum. The exhibition features works in various media by 29 of SBTT's artists.

The Sloss Metal Arts Show features works by five artists of the Sloss Metal Arts program. Sloss Metal Arts is a cast iron art program operating out of Sloss Furnaces’ historic No. 2 Casting Shed. The programming is dedicated to teaching and expanding metal casting as an art form that honors the industry upon which Birmingham was built and the iron legacy of Sloss. 

Will Jacks: rabbit, rabbit, which opens this Friday, May 3, showcases brand-new pieces by Will Jacks, a process artist best known for his photographic works. This is Jacks’ first solo exhibition in Birmingham. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Art / Photography at Troy University. 

Jacks was recognized in 2019 by the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters for outstanding achievement in photography for his monograph Po' Monkey's: Portrait of a Juke Joint. Jacks will be on hand to sign copies this book documenting a Mississippi Delta juke joint. The books will be available for purchase at the reception.

The exhibitions on view at BPL are made possible by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, awarded to the Friends Foundation of the Birmingham Public Library. They are curated by Paul Barret and Margaret Splane.
