November is National Hospice & Palliative Care Month: Book Suggestions from North Birmingham Library
As many of you are already aware, November is Hospice & Palliative Care Month. This annual observance is designed to educate the public on the important role that caregivers, hospital staff, and volunteers play in helping our aging seniors dealing with health challenges.
This topic is
important to many communities across the globe and deserves to be highlighted and discussed. That’s why the North Birmingham Regional Branch Library is offering up a list of our best
resources on hospice care and palliative care.
Best Non-Fiction Books
The Complete Legal Guide to Senior Care by Brette McWhorter Sember
- One of the great things about this book is that it was
written by an attorney. The book goes in depth on the legal, residential, financial, and medical
aspects involved with senior care.
Graceful Exit: How to Advocate Effectively, Take Care of Yourself, and Be Present for the Death of a Loved One by Gustavo Ferrer
- This is for anyone who finds him or herself thrust into the position of caregiver for a
dying loved one. Written by a doctor, this book goes into detail with various checklists and
guides on how to go through this difficult process.
You and Your Aging Parents: A Guide to Legal, Financial, and Health Care Issues - American Bar Association
- While it’s true that
not everyone in hospice is aging, it’s certainly important to keep that population in mind when
discussing hospice and palliative care. This book goes into a variety of crucial topics on care for
an aging parent- especially the social and emotional aspects.
The Good Caregiver: A One-of-a-kind Compassionate Resource for Anyone Caring for An Aging Loved One by Robert L. Kane, M.D.
- This is another book on our list that was written by a doctor. Dr. Kane guides readers
through the process while also drawing from personal experience. An excellent resource.
While these are often difficult topics to address (especially when it involves hospice or palliative
care for a loved one) it is crucial to face head on. Preparation is key.
