Fox 6 Anchor Steve Crocker and 94.9 FM DJ Lady Woo Among June 18's Read-In for Justice Speakers

Fox 6 anchor Steve Crocker and Lady Woo, a popular DJ with 94.9 FM in Birmingham, are among the speakers who will be "Telling the Stories" Friday at the Birmingham Public Library’s first in-person Read-In for Justice. DeJuana Thompson, Interim CEO of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, will also be one of the speakers.

The public is invited to attend this nationally-recognized program taking place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 18,  in Learning Tree Park adjacent to the Five Points West Library, 4812 Ave. W (across from the Birmingham Complex). It takes place on the eve of the annual Juneteenth  celebration

Previous Read-In for Justice programs were held virtually on the Birmingham Public Library Facebook page.  This will be the first held outdoors for the public, allowing in-person participation.

Read-In for Justice was formed in June 2020 amid national protests of racial injustice sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. The program was a finalist for the Urban Libraries Council 2020 Innovations Award in the Race and Social Equity category.

Read-In for Justice allows the public to use their voices to educate the public about civil rights, raise awareness about racial injustice, celebrate  diversity, and empower/uplift children and teens. Past virtual Read-In for Justice events have spotlighted Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Women's History Month, and the 1963 Mighty Children's Civil Rights March in Birmingham

Gelenda Norman of the Central Library, coordinator of Read-In for Justice, said she is excited about the line-up of speakers and to see the event  achieve its original goal of presentations about race and social justice before live audiences.

“We will have past readers and new readers, along with the giveaway of books and other surprises,” Norman said. “We want to kick off the celebration of Juneteenth.”

The speakers will include:

 * Valerie Wilson, public information officer for the City of Birmingham Division of Youth Services.

* Carmen Mays, founder of Elevators, a Birmingham-based business that offers virtual and in-person business consulting
