Birmingham Public Library Hosting Nearly 70 Free Programs & Activities During 2025 Spring Break March 24-28


 


Birmingham, Ala.  - Hey families: Looking for free programs and activities to do while your students are on 2025 Spring Break the week of Monday, March 24, through Friday, March 28? 

The Birmingham Public Library is hosting 69 activities and programs for families of all ages next week at library locations across the City of Birmingham. 

Spring Break Week events include:

 • Spring Break movies at Springville Road Regional, Smithfield and Southside Libraries

 • “Who Done It” program at Titusville Branch Library (Tuesday) and a line dance class for seniors on Friday 

Lunch and Learn with Chef Polly a free cooking demo at Central Library on Tuesday, March 25

 • Experimental Wednesday, a mini science experiment program at East Ensley Branch Library

 • Southside Spice Club and a Women’s History Month Scavenger Hunt at Southside Branch Library 

Three free art exhibits at the Central Library downtown 

Empowering Women Self-Care kits available at Smithfield Branch Library 


• Crochet classes at North Birmingham Regional Library and West End Branch Library

•  East Ensley Branch Library will host Reed Basket Weaving on Tuesday and a Jewelry Making Class on Wednesday 

• Pop-in-Play (PiP) interactive playtime for lap sitters and teetertotters at Avondale Regional Library on Tuesday 

Dance along to Just Dance videos on YouTube at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at North Avondale Branch Library.

Do you love art? Drop by the Central Library, 2100 Park Place in downtown Birmingham, during library hours to check out three free art exhibitions, "Art with Spin: Sculptures" by Corinne Cox, "Art on the Inside", and "Issues": New Paintings by Jourdan Truth McGowan. 
There will be reception honoring the sculptress Corinne Cox and the artists whose work is featured in "Art on the Inside" this Saturday, March 22, from 3:00 to 5:00 in the First Floor Gallery. The Art for Everyone exhibition series is made possible by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts awarded to the Friends Foundation of BPL. 


"Art with Spin": Sculptures by Corinne Cox, First Floor Lobby Gallery 

Art with Spin is an exhibition of whimsical, raku-fired sculptures made by ceramist Corinne Cox. Some of the featured pieces include depictions of imaginary creatures perched in open books and sculptures of what Cox calls a “spinning head” topped with fantastical objects and animals. 



 "Issues": New Paintings by Jourdan Truth McGowan 

"Issues" is a series of large-scale canvases inspired by covers of iconic magazines. Artist Jourdan Truth McGowan's thought-provoking reinterpretations of the covers are bold commentaries on culture, politics, and religion. His paintings invite viewers to engage in meaningful reflection and dialogue on the pressing challenges of our time.




"Art on the Inside": A Collection From the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project 

 "Art on the Inside" is an exhibition of recent works by students who have participated in the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project at Auburn University. Founded with the knowledge that creativity is an essential trait of humanity, APAEP works to create spaces where currently and formerly incarcerated individuals can practice meaningful engagement with the arts and develop their own artistic voices.

Southside Spice Club

 Do you love to cook? Do you like to try new flavors and recipes? OR maybe you are in a cooking rut and don't know how to start expanding your cooking repertoire Whether you're a foodie or just interested in trying something new Southside Spice Club is for you! Pick up a new spice kit beginning on the first Tuesday of each month. Each kit will include a pre-portioned spice, a regional/historical background of the spice, 2 recipe cards featuring the monthly spice and book recommendations to find more recipes with the featured spice. Explore these great flavors with us! This kit is free (while supplies last) and open to the public. One kit per family please.

Titusville library will provide a small visual puzzle display and provide a small prize for patrons who solve the puzzle. This program provides an opportunity for intellectual engagement.

Since the 1970s In this talk, Dr. Natasha Zaretsky traces the historical roots of the political right’s current preoccupation with gender and sexuality. The talk explores the gender and sexual politics of the early 1970s in order to contextualize the centrality of gender to our current political moment.
