Celebrate Women's History Month at the Birmingham Public Library




March is designated as Women's History Month, celebrating the contributions women have made across the United States. 

Twelve Birmingham Public Library locations across the city are hosting nearly 40 programs and activities honoring women all month long. Events kicked off last week with several programs, including  Pratt City Branch Library's tribute last Thursday to jazz pianist and singer Hazel Scott, the first African-American woman to host her own television show and BPL's Bards & Brews Open Mic Poetry highlighting Women's History Month last Friday at TrimTab Brewing. 

Upcoming events include:

* On March 24, Smithfield Branch Library will give out free Empowering Women Self-Care Kits while supplies last.
 
* Avondale Library (March 17-31) Color your own bookmarks featuring quotes by Clara Barton, Harriet Tubman, Florence Nightingale, and Sojourner Truth. and craft your own "Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History" magnet, a keepsake craft can be completed in the library or picked up to take home.


* “I AM WOMAN Movie Mania.” Every Wednesday in March at 3:30 p.m. at Smithfield Branch.

Celebrate Women’s History Month in March by viewing the exhibition Art with Spin: Sculptures by Corinne Cox every day during library hours on 1st Floor Gallery of the Central Library. 



 Celebrate National Nutrition Month at the Central Library on March 25 during a "Lunch and Learn" presented by Chef Polly.  Chef Polly King of Full Plate LLC will demonstrate how to prepare a healthy meal and then serve the meal to the attendees. Test your knowledge on extraordinary women in history all throughout the month of March. Complete the quiz and earn a prize! Every weekday in March. Open to all ages. 

“Stitching With Wilhelmina” Thursday, March 6, and “Stitch and Chat,” Thursdays, March 13, 27, all from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. 

Did you know stitching is a great way to relax? Learn different stitching techniques of embroidery and cross stitching.

Handmade Envelopes Craft, Thursday, March 13 | 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Mother’s Day is coming up soon. Add a personal touch to your letters and cards with a beautifully crafted handmade envelope! In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to create unique envelopes using scrapbooking paper, adding charm to any correspondence. Using a simple template, you'll design an envelope featuring eye-catching patterns on both the inside and outside. All materials will be provided. No experience necessary! 



Plate Decorating Workshop for Seniors, Wednesday, March 19, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Join us at Powderly Branch for a relaxing and creative workshop where you can design your own decorative porcelain plate. Whether you prefer freehand drawing or using stencils for guidance, you'll have the opportunity to showcase your artistic flair using vibrant, permanent marker.

Women’s History Month: Victoria Villasana-Inspired Art Program, Tuesday, March 18,  11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. 

Celebrate Women’s History Month with a creative and engaging art workshop inspired by Victoria Villasana, an artist known for her bold, geometric embroidery designs. In this hands-on session, adults and seniors will use colorful yarns to embellish printed images of influential women who have shaped history through their talents and voices. No prior art experience is needed—just bring your creativity! Join us for an afternoon of artistic expression, cultural appreciation, and community connection. All materials will be provided.

Diabetes Empowerment and Self-Care, Wednesday, March 19, 2025, 10 – 11am

Health professionals from Mills Pharmacy will teach participants pre-diabetes and diabetes management, how to prepare meals, and the best exercise to include in their daily routine. There are currently over 199 million women living with diabetes, and this is projected to increase to 313 million by 2040, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Shout It Out! Monday, March 10, during library hours 

Shout It Loud! Girls Rule! Grab N Go and with kit and tell your story and the stories of others once you create your paper megaphone. Say It Loud during Women's History Month. 


Springville Road Regional hosted a few women's programs last week, including a quilting workshop last week and a fiction book club on March 11 spotlighting The Briar Club by Kate Quinn. This group meets in person and virtually through Zoom. Sign up at the link below


Clever Crocheters, Wednesday, March 19, 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. 

As part of our Women’s History Month celebration, join us and learn how to crochet. We will be making a small purse and an ear warmer. 

Sewing, Friday, March 21 | 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. 

Each month we sew simple projects and all materials are provided.

Heirloom Society: Springville Road Seed Swap with Master Gardner Vickie Jones, Saturday, March 22, 2025, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. 

Join us for a seed swamp. Bring your open-pollinated heirloom seeds, swap with other gardeners, and take home more seeds to plant. Jefferson County Master Gardner Vickie Jones will demonstrate seed sowing and answer your frequently asked seed questions.



Programs held so far at Titusville Branch include making Kumihimo Friendship Bracelets on March 7 and  Adult Coloring Club Craze, held earlier today, Thursday, March 13.

Celebrating Women's History Month, Wednesday, March 19, 2025, 10:30 – 11:3 a.m. 

Women's History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women. Titusville Branch will display books by female authors and will be accepting donations (new items only - never used - such as combs, deodorant, socks, bar soap, etc.). This program is geared toward lending support to those who are experiencing a struggle and helping them get back on their feet. 




Titusville Branch will decorate the library purple and have staff wear purple to support equality. This event will include games, giveaways, and snacks. 

Trivia: Women's History Month, Thursday, March 27, 2025, 10:30 a.m.– 11:30 a.m.
 
Titusville Branch will host a trivia event to celebrate women's achievements, focusing on local history. This program offers an opportunity to socialize and addresses the need to observe and honor history.

Ladies, lets improve our fitness levels throughout March with fun, free, weekly workouts. Fellas, you are welcome to join us too.
