In a Q&A with BPL PR Director Roy Williams, class instructor C.J. Wade talked about what attendees can expect Tuesday in the Mindful Eating: What's Eating You? class.
BPL: How did you come up with the title of the March 4 class "Mindful Eating: What's Eating You?
C.J. Wade: Many of us eat in the car on the way to our next destination, or we eat while we work, or we forget to eat altogether. Mindful Eating is a practice known in the wellness world and I wanted to extend that practice by tapping into the things that cause mindless or forgetful eating habits. When you are aware of something within, you have the power to change it.
BPL: Food Is Your Friend is July's topic this year- In your "Mindful Eating: What's Eating You" conversation March 4 will you talk about what foods are good for you vs. which foods are bad for your health?
CJ Wade: We will tap into food choices a bit, but we will focus on the "why" behind our eating habits.
BPL: Will the "What's Eating You" discussion also delve into what we are drinking? Two years ago I had a massive kidney stone that required surgery to remove it because I was not drinking enough water and drank to many sodas.
CJ Wade: Yes! Because we eat for different reasons (which we'll discuss in depth during the session), we definitely will talk about beverages. We won't dive too deep because we have Water Works later this year!
BPL: You will examine some interesting food topics during What's Eating You - from compulsive eating and eating disorders, to the moral/ethical and religious aspects of food. What should people expect from that conversation?
CJ Wade: This session is designed to ask internal questions about why you do what you from an eating perspective. There's no shaming and no "ivory tower" conversations ever in my sessions. We're going to open the floor for discovery, support, and a splash of laughter. And of course, we're going to eat a snack!
BPL: How do people gain bad eating habits - is some of it from genetics and also based on where they live - for instance we eat a lot of fried food here in South while someone in China may eat more spicy foods.
CJ: All of that! We usually learn eating habits from observation and exposure first - what we saw in our homes, schools, and communities growing up. We inadvertently learn what's normal, good, and bad. So, just like we learn as children, we can learn how to change necessary habits as adults. Our bodies change over time and that can require adjusting those habits to be our best selves.
BPL: Drugs like Ozempic that are normally used to treat diabetes are all the rave in the U.S. as folks use them to lose weight. What are your thoughts on that?
CJ: I always believe that you should do what is best for your health with the guidance of a medical and holistic practitioner. Do your research, talk with your physician/professionals, and make a plan so you can have longevity and peace with the outcome.
BPL: Anything else to add?
CJ: Everyone is welcome to join our comfortable chat about wellness. I love meeting with this community. We share laughs, insight, and support every month. When you come, you're in the right place!
