Free Saturday Program Gives Families a Place to Play, Learn and Grow Together

The Birmingham Public Library is excited to host Birmingham-based Small Magic’s Ready Saturdays and Expect More, two free play-based early learning programs.

Beginning on October 3, families are invited to spend Saturday mornings playing, learning and growing together through activities designed to help young children build important early literacy and learning skills. Small Magic will host two free programs for families this fall, Ready Saturdays and Expect More.  

Ready Saturdays encourages parents and caregivers to slow down, follow their child’s lead and discover simple ways to support learning through everyday moments. Trained educators will provide activities, guidance and encouragement while families learn together in a welcoming library environment.

Expect Moore is a program designed to provide support for expecting parents during weeks 12 through 32 of pregnancy.

Hosting Small Magic’s “Ready Saturdays” and “Expect More” programs fits the Birmingham Public Library (BPL)’s mission  “to provide the highest quality experience to our community for lifelong learning, cultural enrichment and enjoyment, said Janine Langston, BPL’s executive director.

“Programs like Ready Saturdays and Expect More give families an opportunity to learn practical strategies they can take home while also making the library a fun place for children and caregivers to connect,” Langston said.

Through Ready Saturdays and Expect More, families will discover how play can help children:

• Build language and communication skills.
• Develop curiosity and creativity.
• Strengthen connections with parents and caregivers.
• Learn through everyday experiences.
• Develop early literacy skills in a fun, natural way.

Parents and caregivers will also receive ideas and activities they can use at home as they continue supporting their child's learning.

Small Magic emphasizes that parents and caregivers are their child's first teachers, and Ready Saturdays is designed to give families the tools, confidence and encouragement to embrace that role. Expect More will provide expecting parents with skills helping them be successful in raising young children.
