BPL’s 2020 Summer Learning Virtual Programs Kick off Monday, June 8, 2020

Details: BPL is hosting its Summer Learning programs online for the first time. Register at  www.cobpl.org/summerlearning. Craft materials will be provided at Five Points West, North Birmingham, Springville Road, and Avondale Libraries; pick up Wednesday prior to program date. 2020 BPL Summer Learning is made possible by the generous support of the Alabama Power Foundation, Friends Foundation of the Birmingham Public Library, Domino’s and EBSCO.

Hey parents: Are you looking for fun, free activities for your kids to do this summer from the comfort of your own home? Then sign up today for 2020 Birmingham Public Library Summer Learning, which is going completely virtual for the first time.

This year’s theme is “Imagine Your Story.” Registration is underway now at this link www.cobpl.org/summerlearning. Everyone who registers and logs minutes in Beanstack will be entered into a drawing for a prize pack.

2020 BPL Summer Learning kicks off on Monday, June 8, and runs through the end of July. There will be more than 60 programs and activities for patrons of all ages – from youth to teens and adults.

All programs (except a few on the Zoom video app) will appear live on the BPL Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/BirminghamPublicLibrary.

 Youth programs will include:

Jester Jim’s Juggling Show, Tuesday, June 9, 10 a.m., Central Library-With a trunk full of props and a looping machine, Jester Jim will have young and old glued to his every sound as he performs his amazing beat box intro. Watch live on BPL Facebook page.

 • McWane Science Center, Wednesday, June 10, 2 p.m., East Ensley Library-The McWane Center will serve up an array of fiery combustion reactions in a video made specifically for BPL Summer Learning participants. Watch live on BPL Facebook page.

Alabama Ballet's Dance Discovery Presents a Mixed Repertory Show, Monday, June 15, 10 a.m., Ensley Branch Library –Viewers will see a wide range of ballet dance styles with new and interesting movements all in one show. Watch live on BPL Facebook page.

 • Dragon Eggs, Wednesday, June 24, 10 a.m., Smithfield Library. Learn how to make your own dragon egg from our video tutorial. Craft materials will be provided at Central, Five Points West, North Birmingham, Springville Road, and Avondale Library on Wednesday, June 24th.  • Dynamic Education Adventures: Fairytale Science, Friday, June 26, 10 a.m., Springville Road Regional Library - Ms. Jan the Science Lady will share cool science from some of your favorite stories, from the Frog Prince to Snow White. Watch live on the BPL Facebook page.

•  Anti-Bullying and Self-Defense, Thursday, July 2,  12 p.m., Wylam Branch Library - Martial arts instructor Stacey Burkes will teach anti-bullying tactics that will empower your child to avoid confrontation and improve their self-confidence. 

• Forensic Science Evident to the Contrary, Monday, July 6, 10 a.m. - You're the detective! Something's afoot and the facts don't seem to add up. This calls for someone with a keen eye to take a closer look. Or favorite forensic science pal, Dr. Beth Gardner from the UAB Department of Criminal Justice, helps us explore the important role science plays in the world of police work and solving crimes.  Adult programs will include: 

 •  Intro to Genealogy (Tuesday, June 9, 12 p.m.), The Central Library  – This introductory class from BPL's Southern History Department will help families get started on their genealogical journey by researching courthouse and church records, U.S. Census data and online resources.  • Cane-Fu with Veteran Karate Instructor Stacey Burkes, Wylam Branch Library, Thursday, July 2, 10 a.m. - This martial arts class will teach seniors how to protect themselves and also how to turn a cane into a self-defense tool. Watch live on the BPL Facebook page.

 • At Home with “Chef E” Cooking Program (teens and adults), Thursday, July 9, 10 a.m., East Lake Branch Library – Participants will be encouraged to try a recipe at home taught by Chef E or post a pic of their kitchen creations and enter a drawing to win a $25 gift card to a Birmingham restaurant from BPL.  • Imagine This: Mindful Yoga, Monday, June 22, 10 a.m., Powderly Branch Library - Imagine your mind and body fully relaxed with Mindful Yoga taught by instructor Marie Blair. Watch live on the BPL Facebook page.
