Earth Day 2023: 3 (Free!) Ways You Can Be Sustainable

Earth Day is this Saturday, April 22, 2023.

For the past 50 years, this special day has been celebrated annually on April 22 by billions of people around the globe. Earth Day is a chance for everyone to join together in promoting awareness for the health of our environment.

With Earth Day on the horizon, you may be wondering what you can do help the environment. But sustainability often seems to come with expensive lifestyle changes and sustainable swaps tend to have high price tags, so you may think green living is out of your reach.

Worry not! I’m going to give you three easy tips to help Mother Earth and be more sustainable. And best of all, they’re free!

So, let’s get started.

A library worker suggesting that you get a library card? Groundbreaking. But a library card comes with access to all types of stories and experiences available throughout the entire Jefferson County Library Cooperative. That means any materials, be they books, movies, CDs, or audiobooks, that we have are available to you at no cost! And since these resources are shared among the community, less items produced and less materials are ending up in a landfill later. It’s a win-win!

2. Don’t Be a Litterbug

Trash belongs in a trashcan, not on the ground. If you have something that you need to toss, keep it with you until you can find a waste bin to put it in. Worried that there might not be one close by? Keep a bag in your car or on your person for refuse that you can throw away later (I use a plastic grocery bag). Just don’t throw trash on the ground. Nobody likes a litterbug.

3. Use What You Have

Has this ever happened to you? You’re at the store and you see a nice new soap (replace this with an item you like or tend to need) and think to yourself “I haven’t bought soap in a while, and I would love some new soap” so you buy it only to go home and realize that you have hundreds of lovely soaps that you haven’t used yet? It used to happen to me all the time until I started making a point of using up what I have before buying something new or seeing if I could do without it altogether.

Finishing a product or making do with what you have before going out to buy something new not only keeps your home clutter-free, but it helps lessen the amount of trash you create and the number of resources you use.

With these tips, you’re now one step closer to saving the planet and living a more eco-friendly life.
Remember, while you may be just one person, all of our efforts together can make a big difference.

Happy Earth Day!
