Adventure Begins at Your Library programs start this week! Throughout June and July, the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) has 256 Summer Reading programs for all patrons to enjoy. 

Some of the Central Library's programs are happening this week. Keep reading to learn more about their upcoming programs and see what other programs they're highlighting.

If you haven't registered for Summer Reading yet, stop by any BPL location to register and win prizes throughout the summer for completing a B-I-N-G-O card. We have Summer Reading programs and cards for all ages (even adults!).

Summer Art Market
Saturday, June 8 | From 12:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The BPL's first-ever art market features local artists, makers, and food trucks. Get something new to add some personality to your place or get a treat for yourself from one of our vendors.

The Self-Care MasterMind: Journaling for Life
Monday, June 17 | Starts at 5:30 p.m.

Journaling is a therapeutic means that can help clarify your thoughts and feelings by keeping a record of them. In this session, participants will learn how to incorporate journaling into their self-care regimen, what the different types of journaling are, and note-taking tips to help capture moments for remembering. Christina (C.J.) Wade is the instructor for the Self-Care MasterMind series; Ms. Wade is a licensed massage therapist and certified health coach. 

Youth Programs

Alabama Ballet: Dance Discovery
Tuesday, June 18 | Starts at 10:00 a.m.

The Alabama Ballet provides a look inside the daily life of a professional ballet dancer from the ballet technique to costumes and pointe shoes. The audience will enjoy participating in fun exercises that challenge coordination. The program concludes with a performance by Alabama Ballet Company dancers. A 24-hour advance registration is appreciated; call 205-226-3600 to inquire about registration. 

Birmingham Zoo: Reptilian Reputations to Fascination
Friday, June 21 | Starts at 10:00 a.m.

Snakes, dinosaurs, and cool monsters—galore! We will dispel common myths and stereotypes, talk about the adaptations crucial to reptiles over the ages, and turn fear into fascination.

Let's Talk About Medicare: Questions & Answers
Virtual Program on the BPL's Facebook
Thursdays, June 6 and July 11| Starts at 12:00 p.m.

Birmingham licensed insurance advisor Albert McWilliams Sr. is providing his popular Medicare Q&A sessions via the BPL's Facebook to help patrons learn more about their Medicare options and eligibility. McWilliams has been working as an insurance advisor in Birmingham since 2001; he has been a licensed Medicare advisor since 2001 and a licensed ACA (Affordable Care Act) advisor since 2013.

Behind the Locked Door: Treasures of the BPL Rare Book Room
Wednesday, July 31 | Starts at 2:00 p.m.

Patrons walk past this door all the time, but many never get to see what's behind it. We invite you to step into the BPL's Rare Book Room and take a look at some of the library's great treasures. This program is happening in the Computer Lab located on the fourth floor of the Research Library and virtually via Zoom. Only register if you would like to attend virtually.
