Adventure Begins at Avondale Regional Library: 2024 Summer Reading Spotlight

 


Birmingham, Ala. - 2024 Summer Reading continues at the Birmingham Public Library. 16 BPL locations across the city are hosting 256 combined Summer Reading programs for kids, teens, adults and senior citizens during June and July. The 2024 theme is "Adventure Begins at Your Library."


BPL is spotlighting each of our library's Summer Reading programs. Today's spotlight is on Avondale Regional Library, 509 40th Street South. Avondale Regional is hosting 16 programs: 11 for youth, four or adults and one for all ages- including several that have already happened. 

Here are some Summer Reading programs for all ages happening throughout July, recommended by Avondale Librarians Carla Perkins and Ellen Griffin Shade: 


Youth Programs

Avondale Youth Pop-in-Play (PIP) – 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2 and Tuesday, July 9 

Pop-in-Play (PIP) is an exciting interactive playtime for children and their caregivers. This fun-filled adventure includes cool activity centers, circle time, and a whole lot more! 24- hour advance registration required. 

Wacky Wednesday: BINGO Blast! – Wednesday, July 3, at 10:30 a.m. 

ALL AGES It’s time to take your place and get ready for a lightning-fast round of BINGO mania. You’ll be surprised at the array of library prizes you may win when you yell out BINGO! Groups welcome: 24- hour advance registration appreciated. 

Wacky Wednesday: The Birmingham Zoo – Wednesday, July 10, 10:30 a.m. 

 Join us as the Birmingham Zoo takes us on a “Reptilian Reputations” adventure of snakes, dinosaurs, and cool monsters-galore! They will dispel common myths and stereotypes, talk about the adaptations crucial to reptiles over the ages, and turn fear to fascination. Groups welcome: 24- hour advance registration appreciated. 

Time for Stories with Ms. Cas, Thursday, July 11 at 10:30 a.m. 

Preschool / early elementary age story time.

Family Night: Hoop There it Is! – Tuesday, July 16, 6:30 p.m. 

Join the Hoop Lady Robbie Lewis) for an evening of creative movement fun and adventure as she presents the history of that circle, we call the “hula hoop.” Hip, hip, hooray it’s a whirly twirly hula hoop kind of day! 24- hour advance registration appreciated. 

Avondale Teen Program Gaming Day – Friday, July 12 at 2:30 p.m. 

Join us for friendly gaming with the tweens and teens 

LEVEL UP! - Join us Friday, July 12 at 2:30 p.m. 

 Adventure begins when you discover new ways to LEVEL UP! This will be an interactive game day full of fun times, good vibes, and snacks. Programming intended for tweens and teens. Once a Month 

Family Night Tuesday, July 16 at 6:30 p.m. 

 Join us for family fun night at Avondale Regional Library

.Adult Programs

Avondale Adult Grab & Go for Grown-Ups - All day on Mondays in July - July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 

Let's get crafting! Each Monday we'll feature a simple craft project that can be completed in the library or picked up as a kit to take home. Kits available while supplies last. 

Chair Yoga, Wednesday, July 10, 1:00 p.m. 

Participants will learn a gentle form of yoga that will encourage physical activity by making the poses accessible to anyone. 

Club Create, 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays in July – July 10, 17, 24, 31

Join our crafting adventures! Each week we’ll complete a simple craft, with materials and instruction provided. In July we’ll be decorating DIY Peg Games, creating mixed media hot air balloon canvases, crafting paracord “adventure bracelets,” and building and painting lady bug houses. 


Memory Café – Monday, July 15, 2:00 p.m. 

This program will offer dementia patients and their caregivers the opportunity to enjoy regular, enjoyable social interaction in a welcoming environment. We will also provide fun activities that will offer cognitive stimulation. We hope that friendships will be formed as a result of the social activities. Registration preferred. 

Crochet/Knit Group – Saturday, July 20, 2:00 p.m.

Participants can relax, form friendships, enjoy learning a new craft or improve their fiber art techniques. Beginners welcome!
