BPL Fall Spotlight: Southside Branch Library September Programs Include Spice Club, Mayan Weaving Grab n Go Kits, Investing for Teens
Birmingham, Ala. - The Birmingham Public Library PR department is spotlighting monthly programs available this fall at our library locations across the city as students return to school.
Today's spotlight is on Southside Branch Library, 1814 11th Ave. South.
Southside Branch has free fun programs for patrons of all ages during September, including new recipes from the Southside Space Club, a Mayan Weaving Grab n Go Kit to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, and a teen investing program on Tuesdays beginning September 17.

Do you love to cook? Do you like to try new flavors and recipes? OR maybe you are in a cooking rut and don't know how to start expanding your cooking repertoire Whether you’re a foodie or just interested in trying something new, Southside Spice Club is for you! Pick up a new spice kit on the first Tuesday of each month.
Each kit will include a pre-portioned spice, a regional/historical background of the spice, 2 recipe cards featuring the monthly spice and book recommendations to find more recipes with the featured spice. Explore these great flavors with us! This kit is free (while supplies last) and open to the public. One kit per family please.
Monday, September 16th - Friday, September 20th: Mayan Weaving Grab n’Go Kit
Join us in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month!
The Mayan Indians of Guatemala are known for their colorful weavings. This Grab N' Go activity creates an opportunity for the family to celebrate the beautiful Guatemalan culture during National Hispanic Heritage month by weaving yarn to create a bookmark or bracelet.
Over 1,500 years ago, it is said the ancient Mayan civilization were taught to weave by moon goddess and cosmic weaver, Ix Chel. The items created symbolized wealth and social status, as well as they were practical at face value.
Come by Southside Branch and pick up the Mayan Weaving Grab N' Go Bag and weave a beautiful bracelet or bookmark!!
Tuesdays beginning September 17th, 4:00-4:45 p.m.: It’s A Money Thing: Investing for Teens
It's a Money Thing is a course for young adults to learn more about being able to do what you love and live comfortably with the money that you earn. It's about investing in yourself first- through education, saving, and planning so you have the freedom to one day give something back. The lessons will cover how to budget, how to understand a paycheck, and what it means when a company goes public, that will help you take charge of your financial future.
The facilitator of this program, Harvey May, has a 43-year career with Morgan Stanley. He is spending his retirement teaching financial literacy classes to young residents of Birmingham. Harvey believes that teaching the younger generation the advantages of saving early in life, turning spenders into savers, and saving early for retirement, is vital to ensure a young person's financial success.
