Central Library to Host BPL Friends Bookstore 2023 Spring Sale April 25-27

  It’s almost time for the BPL Friends Bookstore Spring sale! Mark your calendar for Tuesday, April 25 through Thursday, April 27 at the Central Library in downtown Birmingham. This special three-day sale will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the first floor in the Grand Reading Room.  All proceeds benefit the  Birmingham Public Library  and help sponsor the many great programs and services our libraries offer all year long. Plan on joining us to hunt for all those great treasures you have been looking for. We are having a last chance sale on audio books – they will not be around again! Come check out the selection of fiction and non-fiction books for all ages. There will be DVD’s, CD’s, and LP’s as well as vintage books, some one-of-a-kind books and so much more. BPL Hosting Alcohol Abuse Panel Discussion April 20 at the Central Library

In observance of Alcohol Awareness Month , the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) is partnering with Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers, Inc., to present Alcohol Free: The Way to Be in 2023. This special event will take place on the first floor of the Central Library  downtown this Thursday, April 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Alcohol Free: The Way to Be in 2023 will feature an in-depth panel discussion on alcohol abuse and the problems it presents to our community. Starting at 11:30 a.m., Dr. Mark Wilson ( Jefferson County Health Department) , Danny Carr (Jefferson County District Attorney ), Tom Flanagan ( Alkermes, Inc. ), and Aileen Hopkins-Murphy (Clinical Director, Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers, Inc .) will engage in a forum addressing America’s most serious health problem, which claims the lives of 90,000 people every year.  For the duration of the event, a group of local organizations will be on hand to share information and resources about on a variety of ...

BPL Celebrating National Poetry Month with Bards & Brews, Poetry Bookmarks

April is National Poetry Month, and the Birmingham Public Library is celebrating those with the gift of spoken word. Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month highlights the important role that poets play in society and to spread the word that poetry matters.  Besides hosting the nationally recognized Bards & Brews spoken word poetry/craft beer event with an Open Mic at 6:30 p.m. this Friday, April 14, at the Central Library downtown, BPL is celebrating all month long by offering National Poetry Month Bookmarks through the end of April at West End Branch Library.
