Lewis has been busy meeting patrons, creating programs and forming a friendly and efficient culture for her new staff over the past couple of weeks and is excited to join the Smithfield community.

"I am excited to put to use a more secure foundation of knowledge in pursuit of gaining more purposeful experiences with BPL”. Lewis said. "I am grateful and pleased to be a part of a great team."

The public is invited to a "Meet & Greet the New Staff of Smithfield Library" on October 4, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Besides Lewis, other staff at Smithfield Library are: David Camp and Samantha Gaston, both full-time Library Assistant III; Cornelius Lee, part-time Library Assistant II; and Trinity Dix-Patterson, part-time Library Assistant I.

As branch manager at Smithfield Library, Lewis said her goal is to "continue with the cultivation of the rich history of the community and city since this was the first building specifically built to hold a library for black residents of Birmingham."

"We will strive to create avenues in which to promote life-long learning and cultural enrichment while having some good old fashioned fun and enjoyment, " she said.

Smithfield Branch Library  opened in 1918 as the Booker T. Washington Library, Birmingham's first black public library and one of the first libraries for black Alabamians.  At the time, it was located in three rooms inside the historic Masonic Temple Building at the corner of 4th Avenue North and 17th Street.  In 1956, it was moved and renamed the Smithfield Library Branch at its current location, #1 8th Avenue West.
