"Southern Exposure" Films Donated to all Birmingham Public Library Locations

BPL has received 18 copies of the 2023 "Southern Exposure" DVD award-winning documentary series.  

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Alabama Rivers Alliance and Black Warrior Riverkeeper have donated to the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) 18 copies of the latest editions of Southern Exposure, an award-winning documentary series educating the public about Alabama’s natural resources.

“These beautifully captured short films will enhance our collection and be available for borrowing at all BPL locations,” said Janine Langston, BPL’s executive director. “We are appreciative of this generous donation and honored to be a resource to help educate the public about Alabama’s natural resources.”

Each of BPL’s 18 locations now has one DVD copy of the 2023 edition of Southern Exposure, a series of documentary shorts on various Alabama environmental topics by independent filmmakers. DVDs of previous Southern Exposure editions are available at all BPL branches thanks to Alabama Rivers Alliance and Black Warrior Riverkeeper’s prior donations.

 “We love making Southern Exposure films available for free throughout the Birmingham Public Library system,” said Charles Scribner, executive director of Black Warrior Riverkeeper. “It is a pleasure to deliver Southern Exposure films each year to every public library in the Black Warrior River watershed.” 

Created in six weeks each summer, Southern Exposure films celebrate special people and places in Alabama while exploring complex issues and solutions. Made possible through partnerships with environmental and conservation groups across the state, the documentaries give viewers a sense of how much Alabama has to offer and the importance of protecting all of its resources.

"This ongoing collaboration with BPL continues to help us and our partners amplify the inspiring stories and critical issues within our communities, featuring those special Alabamians protecting our rivers and enriching the heart of the Black Warrior River watershed, year after year!" 

The Altamont School in Birmingham will host the World Premiere of the 2024 Southern Exposure films on Friday, September 27. The free event will include the filmmakers, people featured in the films, Alabama Rivers Alliance staff, and many partner organizations from across the state.
