BPL Helping With Virtual Learning – Over 900 New Student Library Cards Issued

The Birmingham Public Library is helping metro area schools assist their students who will be taking classes virtually from home this fall.

Librarians at BPL locations across the city have been receiving phone calls from schools whose students are in need of library cards. BPL has also seen a dramatic jump in requests for online books as well as regular books as they help school systems on their student reading lists for the fall.

“As schools start to go back, the Central Library Circulation staff has been very busy issuing cards so students can have full access to our electronic resources,” said Jiemin Fan, Head of Circulation at Central Library downtown. "We have processed 909 library cards so far.”

Instead of sending traditional cards, BPL staffers have been assigning students virtual library cards, an example of how BPL has adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If any other schools or patrons desire assistance from BPL for library cards, call (205) 226-3601 or email bplcirc@cobpl.org.
