Smithfield Branch Library Hosting 3 Virtual Computer Workshops in September

Smithfield Branch Library is hosting three virtual computer classes in September, continuing a series of free online workshops the Birmingham Public Library has hosted since the COVID-19 pandemic began in mid-March.

The workshops will be as follows (all via the video conference site Zoom):

* How to Hoopla, led by Ranchel Marable (Wednesday, September 9 at 11:00 a.m.)

* Introduction to Computer Basics, led by Earnest Wrenn (Wednesday, September 16 at 2:00 p.m.)

* Google Job Search, led by Heather McWilliams (Wednesday, September 23, 2:00 p.m.)

How to Hoopla - Wednesday, September 9, 11:00 a.m. Online via Zoom.

This BPL online resource allows patrons to access books, comics, audiobooks, movies and more for free all from the comfort of their homes.

Does it sound too good to be true? Join in our HOW TO HOOPLA class to find out how to use your digital device to save your quarantine. This class will feature instruction and a Q & A portion to get you started in a new world of digital content.

 Introduction to Computer Basics- Wednesday, September 16, 2:00 p.m. Online via Zoom.

This tutorial in Basic Computers will help you understand how computers work and how to use them. We'll talk about how to set up a computer, the difference between hardware and software, and the types of computers you can use. We'll also explore operating systems, applications, the cloud, and a whole lot more.

Google Job Search - Wednesday, September 23, 2:00 p.m. Zoom. 

Learn how to use Google's latest search engine, Google Jobs, to find and apply for your next job. This class will include a tutorial of Google Jobs, as well as a tutorial for using your gmail account to create, store, and upload your resume.

In August 2018, the Birmingham Public Library was the first Alabama library to host a Grow with Google workshop.

In June 2019, the Atlantic Magazine featured how BPL's computer workshops and free access to computers as an example of how libraries are helping bridge the digital gap.
