We are in our second full week of Oceans of Possibilities! Dive into the fun with exciting programs, like a live show from Bama Air Dogs at the Avondale Regional Branch Library, a murder mystery aboard the Titanic at Springville Road Regional Branch Library, and more.

Monday, June 13

Ocean View Tiny Art Show

Calling all artists! Make a big splash when your masterpiece is displayed in our first-ever Tiny Art Exhibit! Create an ocean-themed painting with acrylic paints and a 3x3 canvas that we provide. Kits are available at the circulation desk beginning June 1 and final submissions are due by June 30. 

Dynamic Education Adventure 

Smithfield Branch Library | 1 8th Ave W

Pour over some super science fun with The Science Lady! Liquid Lab is an exciting, engaging journey through some really cool and really cold liquids. Fifty is Nifty

At long last, the 1950 Census is here! Now is the time to learn what's new, what's been dropped, and how you can use the 1950 Decennial Census to further your genealogy research.

Upcycle your old magazine and book pages into beautiful paper beads! Create a bracelet and matching earrings out of paper that would otherwise go straight to the recycle bin. 

UAB ArtPlay Step

Titusville Branch Library (2 6th Ave SW) | Central Library (2100 Park Pl)

From 11:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m. | From 1:00—2:00 p.m.

Rooted in African culture, the art of stepping utilizes claps, stomps, and chants to create rhythms and visual patterns with the body. In this class, students will learn a brief history of the dance form, basic step movements, and listening and teambuilding skills. These fundamentals will be coupled with a dash of showmanship to create a fun, energetic step!

Family Fun Night: Flip Flops & Frisbees

Avondale Regional Branch Library | 509 40th St S

From 6:30—7:30 p.m.

Bama Air Dogs are live at the Avondale Library! Wear your flip-flops and have fun watching the Bama Air Dogs as they soar through the air catching flying discs and performing amazing tricks. Bring a lawn chair, blanket, or towel to sit on. Registration is required.

Murder Aboard the Titanic Live Mystery

Teens will assume the roles of detectives, witnesses, and suspects in a role-playing murder mystery and work together to solve the murder that occurred aboard the Titanic. 

Chair Yoga

Join us for an hour of relaxation and meditation with yoga specialist, Ms. Bridgette Wimbleduff. This chair yoga program is perfect for seniors and anyone who is in the beginning stage of their yoga journey.

UAB ArtPlay Paint

Pick up your paintbrush and let the colors flow as students in this class will dive into learning about the amazing world of seashells. Discover how mollusks make their shells, use them for protection and camouflage and then create a beautiful piece of shell art to take home!

How to Research the History of Your House

Jefferson County enjoys a rich architectural heritage. This talk will introduce you to sources available at the Birmingham Public Library Archives to help you locate vintage photos of your house, building, or church; determine the age of the structure, and learn who has lived or worked there.

Sewing: Beach Treasure Bag

Springville Road Regional Branch Library | 1224 Springville Rd

Participants will be shown a simple project that teaches a new type of sewing skill to make a beach treasure bag. All materials are provided. 

Improv for Seniors 

Smithfield Branch Library | 1 8th Ave W

From 10:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.

Catherine Champion, a local improv actor, teaches improvisational acting techniques and games. The classes are fun, hilarious, and engaging, and teach the same skills that professional comics use.
